IMHO it is a better deal than the GW6400.

Since it has 10k rpm 18G disk, and it supports AMP, so can can be quite flexible in choosing your 2nd CPU.

Does anyone know is the RAM require ECC or not?

You buy three and you'll save another $200 as well. That brings it to less then $400 a machine which is dern good if you ask me-

Does anyone know whether I can pull out the original 128M ECC ram and use all non-ECC ram?

<< Looking through Dell's online manuals, it looks like you need a VRM to add a second processor, which would preclude just picking up a second at NewEgg.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
>>

What is a VRM? voltage regulator
Where and at what price might I find one?

Yes, it's a Voltage Regultor Module - necessary to add a second CPU.
Where - Dell I imagine. How much? I dunno.

ok..thing is i had this server a while back and we only got it with 1 cpu.
In the other slot was a blank card. I basically did just buy another similar cpu to the
one i got and plugged it in.

Removed blankie, inserted new cpu similar to 1st one and rebooted.
Worked. Didn't need anything else, bought nothing else. I handled the entire thing
so i know i did and paid nothing extra. VRMs are usually built-in on the motherboard.
Unless they changed that for this system, i would assume thats still game...

If I hadn't gotten in on that $450 Dell Dimension deal last week, I'd go for this.

Alas, only can do one, but not both.

Thanks Yo2. This is a great deal!

Looking at the specs of this system and doing some search, it seems this system uses the AOpen DX3R Plus motherboard.

The embedded Adaptec AIC-7899 Dual Channel Ultra160 SCSI Adapter kicks ass. It's similar to a 39160 (which by itself costs $225 on PW). Having dual channels allows you to run LVD and single-ended devices on separate channels so you don't need to worry about your CD-RW and DVD-ROM slowing down your hard drives and tape.

The SCSI adapter itself supports 66MHz 64-bit PCI bus. The Serverworks Serverworks LE chipset also 66MHz 64-bit PCI bus. Unfortunately, I think AOpen only runs the 64-bit PCI bus at 33MHz.

BTW, from a casual search on PW, it seems the cheapest mobo with the same ServerWorks ServerSet LE III chipset and embedded dual channel Ultra160 SCSI adapter costs $404! So, just the mobo itself is worth the cost. This is a *great* deal!

damn, I had SC2400 one year ago from dell for $1500. I wish I could wait until now. That server is sitting there collecting dust.

As for VRM, if it uses AOpen mb, it does not need VRM 'cause there is no VRM socket on the mb.

need to decide 1400 or 700?

both servers have to use the embedded video chips. I have dell 2400 and gateay 6500 at home. Both are dual. However, they are very noisy. make sure you put them either downstairs or in basement.

Just bought one of these about a month ago when they were doing the double your hard drive deal. There definatly seems to be something missing there on the mobo other than the processor. The stock CPU has a set of capacitor looking devices behind it, ie toward the back of the case. The slot for the 2nd CPU has a place behind it where it looks like something plugs in. In the previous thread during the double hd deal, I believe it was decided that you needed an additional VRM to make it work.

Well if its really a AOpen mobo like docinthebox says....by the specs it looks like you wont need anything except for another CPU to plug in...I hope thats the case...if anyone tries please let us all know!!!

Bad news... it seems the 1400SC does require a VRM to add a second processor. Download this Information Update document for the 1400SC. (You have to run the executable to unzip.) Take a look at Figure 1.2 "System Board Features". Notice the "voltage regulator module connector (VRM 2)" on the left side of the diagram.

I guess I was wrong. The mobo is probably not the AOpen one.

The standards for VRMs are published by Intel, so it should be the case that as long as you find one that provides the
correct voltage for a 1GHz P3, you're good to go.

You could probably even get Dell to sell you a new, correct VRM for under $25 with a little bit of social engineering...

Yet another sweet deal from Dell. Too bad it's the business section and tax applies.

just a word to the wise: This will not be the incredible speed demon that you dreamed of... It will have pci graphics (after you buy the card) and installing that second cpu requires a matching VRM.

Note: The Gateway 6400 had graphics and the VRM built in.

However Dell is much better than GW and this looks like a great case.
