btw. I just got done speckin' out this sytem...w/ some stuff from Pricewatch and here's what I would get had I not just finished installing my XP1700 on my abitKR7A RAID board

$491 final cost for me after Rebate and $41.93 in sales tax

1Gb ECC Kingston RAM (2 sticks)
18Gb IBM U160 additional HD
64Bit SMC Gigabit NIC
W2K Server 20 client License Retail (subract 320 if U already have Prof or Server - both run duals)

GRAND TOTAL FOR a MADPHAT Server------->$1371.00<-------

the thing that's driving me NUTZ over this server/mobo is the FOUR 64 BIT PCI SLOTS!!! sure, they're 33mhz...but that's STILL 266mb/s!!! FRIGGIN' FAST!

God Bless

Dont forget about the 500sc which is $249 after rebate. It's not as great of a deal, but I picked one up anyways to replace my home server. The 1400sc would be overkill for me.

I am getting the 1400 SC for work, 3-36gb 10k rpm drives in raid 5, 1cpu, adn gonna go with the reabte deal and buy my ram from curcial. 1 GB is less then 400 from crucial as opposed to much dollars from dell.

1 questions is I am going to go with the 20/40gb internal tape backup drive. It says it doesnt include a controller card. WHat controls it then? I imagine I need to get another card? I will be getting the 64mn perc 3 controller for my SCSI raid config.
Thanx!
Good deals on these suckers, especially with free shipping.

I was thinking about getting the tape drive. Note, however, that it is $699; you can buy what appears to be the same drive for something in the $500s with the 15% off discount on software and peripherals, and it comes with a controller. I could be wrong about it being the same drive, but I sure couldn't tell the difference.

So is there a definite yes/no on the dual processor abilities on this systeM? one person said he dropped a pIII in and was off to the races, others say VRM. any other actual experience with this system?

I do service work for Dell and took the DCSE test for this machine. Although I haven't had to work on this machine yet, the guides I have say a VRM must be installed for each processor. Here is a small picture of the system board. Picture

I've searched ALL of google, pricewatch, AND Dell, and I can't find anything on a P3 VRM. I'm completely out of ideas. does anyone have a part# or anything like that? I can ck. our wholesaler, but I don't have any part #s and the descripton returns NOTHING for P3s.

Anyone have any suggestions?

It looks like the motherboard has 2 VRM slots. Buy a 1400SC and then give your supplier the number off the installed VRM

sounds like a decent idea

I'd still like to be able to find the VRM online somewhere and price it. I don't wanna budget incorrectly

The Dell part number for the cheaper tape drive is 340-7423. It is $594.15. It does not say that it comes with a controller as I had thought. It also says it is for PowerEdge 2300/2400/6400.

<< IMHO it is a better deal than the GW6400.

Since it has 10k rpm 18G disk, and it supports AMP, so can can be quite flexible in choosing your 2nd CPU.

Does anyone know is the RAM require ECC or not?
>>

Where did you see it was AMP and not SMP? I can't find anything to that effect.

Ok now more than 5 hours after ordering mine I carried an older one from a building we shut down... The bad news this one was 800Mhz and DID require a VRM. The good news, dell offers these to business users for $19, you have to call though '1-800-www-dell' yes $19 none of that 49 dollar crap (compaq sells thier propriatary ones for 79 so 49 is waaaay over) Just tell em your a business user and you ordered a 1400sc, I did, all is well mine shipped should be here 'bout the same time as the second proc. Please keep in mind my company is a business user and I *am* the primary contact no idea on shipping, but really it doesn't matter. I have seen these VRMs for 25 as well, they are relatively standard by spec, excluding compaq Xeons and maybe P3s, if you notice the linked P2 is the same pic, but most likely it is Identical anyway. BTW newegg was the best deal for the proc, 3year in box 126ish shipped to PA.
One odball thing is I can't track the server anymore, I'mma call them up tommorrow and rip some organs off them if it was cancelled. And yes my credit showed as passed and it was in the config stage last I saw.
Cheers all, enjoy all of you who ordered. I can't wait for my move from scsi2 to U160 in one step

a post mentioned ECC anyone know about buffering or not, or even what the hell buffering does? so out of the high end server loop

so can we start the 'good pci video card' thread now? I ended up getting cheapo ($50) card for my 6400 that's worked fairly well, but i was thinking of getting something better for the 1400.

has anyone seen any good deals on intermediately priced pci video cards as of late?

i found 32Mb dual head matrox g450's starting at ~$110 shipped on pricewatch...

I thought having a 64bit gigabit NIC from SMC wasn't enough. So, I figured, why not get ANOTHER 64bit SCSI U160 card?

I found an Adaptec 29160 for about $190 shipped!

however, I think that the onboard SCSI controller is probably on the PCI bus, as IDE controllers are typically on the PCI bus too. BUT, my concern w/ this motherboard is that the SCSI controller might be on the 32bit PCI bus...which is another part of the motherboard. Wouldn't it make sense that the onboard NIC, video, AND SCSI controller were on the 32bit PCI bus? that would but 5 devices on the 32bit PCI bus and 4 slots open for the 64bit PCI bus.

LMK what U guys think

I would imagine at least the SCSI is on a 64 bit bus. I worked with a poweredge quite a bit more advanced than this one last year and not only was the onboard (RAID in this one) on the 64 bit bus, but it was on a SECOND PCI bus, alone, isolated from everything else. But boy did its video blow...

Ok....for anyone that has ordered a Powerdege 1400 SC here is the Dell part number for the VRM module needed to add the second Processor...7G041....now I got this part number without having the service tag number off the server...so I cannot be 100% sure that is correct...but I did double check with two diferent tech guys if this is the right part and they both said YES...so just call the Dell business section and order this....it goes for a whopping $14 dollars...good luck
