Great deal.

Make sure you downgrade to the Bronze Service contract and only select 128MB of RAM so you qualify for the $250 mail in rebate. Pretty friggin good for a server that you can add a second processor to.

If you put dual CPU's in this, would both CPU's be used when running say Windows2000 and regular business apps? In other words is that already optimized to use both CPU's when running standard software? I'm just not familiar with how dual-cpu systems work. Thanks.

Change the service contract to this:
1Yr Onsite Labor + 1Yr Parts Delivery + 1Yr Technical Support [subtract $487]

You can get the 1u rack mount 800 mhz for 600.
Win 2000 and XP have to be reloaded when you add the second processor, but work well for programs like Photoshop that actually use dual processors.
Remember that these systems come with no OS (Gotta love free Linux!!!)
If I didn't already have 3 dual processor machines....hrmmmm
Maybe Ill buy one for my girlfriends sister.

In NT, you can use Uptomp.exe tool to add support for multiple CPUs.

To update Windows 2000 systems from 1 processor to 2 processors, check out MS knowledge base article Q234558.

Hope this helps.

Edit-> 503.74 is after rebate with 55 bucks in tax for me in NY.

It would be extremely difficult to find a Dual board with a processor, ultra 160 support, an ultra 160 18 GB drive, case and fan for anywhere near 450 bucks. Awesome deal.

Had to just HAD to. 489 shipped to Phila area, 126 for #2 from Newegg. and 512 of registered ECC SDRAM I picked up for 46 bucks 'just in case' a while ago. Free's up my dual 650 for a workstation and I can move all 220Gigs of storage to this one... says its only ATA33 though... it HAS to be at least 66 I would think. But this will be my first *real* server Can't wait this is gonna be great. My poor parents and thier Elevt Bill :-(

Looking through Dell's online manuals, it looks like you need a VRM to add a second processor, which would preclude just picking up a second at NewEgg.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually you don't have to reload (W2K at least) as long as you have one of the multiprocessor HALs already installed. If you have either MPS Uniprocessor or ACPI Uniprocessor showing up in the device manager under Computer then once you add the 2nd processor all you need to do is update the driver and install the Multiprocessor version of whichever HAL you already have. If by chance you got either of the single processor HALs (Standard PC or ACPI pc) then you will need to re-install.

All right, I definetly have the cheapskate bug and the AT effect is gonna make me broke
Up to 24 machines with this beaut, 4 of which are dual processors. Anyone know an easy way into webhosting? at about 500 GB of storage thanks to all the AT HD deals, how much bandwidth would I need?
Anyway...just ordered my survey...don't forget to print the rebate, there should be a link on the dell sites in the upper left if you want the form. or go here if your lazy like me.lazy!

It's clear that Dell is blowing out of their entry level server stuff. The margins are so tiny that keeping machines in stock is costing them more money to store than it is to sell them at a loss.
