Dell Service Tag Question

Hi Everyone,


I work for a small firm that owns several (40+) Dell Dimension systems which are scheduled for disposal (resale) in a few months. For liability purposes, my employer has requested the service tag identifiers (stored in the BIOS and harddrive?) be removed prior to resale. However, I am unaware how to permanently modify or erase the service tag data.

I know HP created a serial number and asset tag editor for their systems:

Does anyone know how to perform asset tag editing for Dimension systems? Retaining the service tags arnt an issue because the associated system warranties have expired.

The service tag is the same as the serial number for dell. I wouldn't worry about the electronic service tag on the systems. If your company has put electronic asset tags, that may be a different story. The asset.com program should work for any dell system (you can do a search under the optiplex downloads). I believe the asset removal command is asset /d or just do a asset /? at the command prompt. Good luck...

We're trying to edit the service tag, not the asset tag. Not sure if u meant asset tag = service tag.

Do you mean the asset program can change the service tag? Because thats what we're interested in. Changing the service tag, not the asset tag.

Never tried it but try the support.dell.com's forum.. with the service tag, u can attempt to get company info through dell.. prob wont be successful but sometimes u never know !

We've already tried. Got nothing but the run around from Dell

yeah it sucks.. reading that some may cause system not to boot

I wouldn't worry about the service tag number - I'd worry more about the recoverable data on those hard drives! Make sure you wipe them (not just format). When we resell our old PCs at work we actually remove and destroy the hard disks.
