Wow! I just got a 5% off coupon code for the Small Biz division. The coupon is even stackable with the other $50 off coupon--this deal just keeps getting better and better! LOL, too bad I can't buy any more systems, I'm still paying for the last 10 Dell deals like this.

I was able to ghost the 20GB Dell drive to my 80GB drive from my old computer. But after seeing all the crap installed (AOL, Real Player, Musicmatch Jukebox, etc). Is it possible to get a clean install off the Dell CD or must I resort to using my copy of WinXP Pro?

Normaly with a standard recovery disk you get everything thats on it.Any chance your Dell XP Home comes with it's own Product Key?,if so maybe you can use your XP disk with your Dell Key.

I bought a 4500 for my friend and set it up tonight, now I know why Dell can still earn money selling them at this price. Dell computers are crapy. also I found 128Mb memory is not enough, it is slower than my 800Mhz system.

Well with all the technical details you provide we totally understand your opinion.

</sarcasm>

That's crappy not crapy. I've had a number of dell's and have found they're quite fast in most major benchmarks. If you've got a specific complaint then maybe we can address that.

Probably won't help this deal anymore, but Discovercard Shop Partner has Dell now --> Cash in $40 get $80 back. Systems must be greater than $1000....

I went ahead and used the WinXP CD that came with my system to see what it did. The cd appears to be a regular WinXP Home install with just a little customizing by Dell. No extra crap installed.

I disagree that this computer is crap. I now have a fast and quiet solution at a sound level that I couldn't achieve with the AMD XP 1800+ setup I dumped.

well, it depends how you think about it. It is fast, 1.8G or higher; it is reliable, dell warranty. but you do not have the fun to build your own systema and try different systems.
Also, my point is Dell does not lost money selling systems at this price.

I heard a funnnny story:
someone asked in a forum: " what are you guys selling on ebay to make money?
Someone replied:" Junks".

Dell certainly can't be making much on it, but that point is moot. I don't care- they're the business, I'm the consumer, I'll decide if it's a good deal or not.

You said they were crap, but I still don't see how you're of that opinion. You say it's fast and reliable, and I'd like to see anyone make a system even as remotely quiet as these without water cooling. Dell's hooded vent system and case construction is abso-lutely brilliant. Their choice of a larger fan also changes the "hum" to a lower frequency, ergo it's less annoying. I've assembled hundreds of PC's and am very happy to have a dell next to me.

Fun to build my own system? Maybe I'm old, but I've got other things to spend my time on. Computers need to be reliable, quiet and inexpensive.

The Dell 4500 at this price point is a sheer marvel of modern technology.

I like both Win2K and WinXP. I have WinXP running on my Dell and my self built server at this moment. I know my way around Win2K better when setting up IIS, sharing directories, and other security issues so I am more comfortable with Win2K, but I figured I should learn how to do those things in WinXP.

I got my 4500 and love it so far. I slapped in the 512 DDR PC2100 I had on hand and it's running great. I am thinking it's time to format it and put on XP Pro without all the pre-loaded crap though.

Question: I want to sign up for AOL(Actually give the 6 months free to my girlfriend's family). What would be the process for doing that? Do I need to have them come over and do it on this computer and then install AOL software on their computer at home and just login? Or can I get some sort of unique registration code for AOL from the software on my computer and give it to them. And I don't believe the system came with an AOL CD, did it?

Check out this thread for some discussion about how to do that

question to Dell 4500 owners.

I upgraded video card to nVidia MX with TV out. I don't know how to use this vid card with TV. Do I need a special adaptor?

An FYI on sound cards and the Dell Dimension front headphone jack.

The Turtle Beach Santa Cruz both has the connector for the front head phone jack.

It also appears that the SB Audigy does not have the connector.

So, if you have integrated sound and want to upgrade get a Santa Cruz.

Note: The SB Live also appears to have the connector

Well, as a barebone configuration with 20G 5400RPM Maxtor drive and 128MB DDR PC 2100 CL2.5 memory, this Dell 4500, albeit very quiet, is also very dog slow. I realize that a 5400RPM will be slow, but I had forgotten what it was like not to be running 768MB of memory. Anybody have this config - 20G hard drive and 128MB RAM - and agree that the system is slow? Rereading through some messages I see that doodoodoo thinks it is. Anyone else?

As soon as I can burn 120GB with the free CDRW I got with it [Liteon], then I will get rid of the 20G by passing it onto an older system that could use a storage capacity upgrade, and install the WD120OJB 7200RPM [w 8MB cache]. Hopefully by then I have been able to bump the memory to 512MB.

I ordered it with the 20gb(value drive ) and 128MB RAM. I actually never turned the system on with the 128MB, I immediately opened up the case and put in 512MB before I ever booted it, but I can imagine the performance being slow with only 128MB. My 120GB WD 8MB Cache hard drive from the Dell deal a few months ago will be going in this computer, while passing the 20GB drive on to my Celeron 300@450 system.
