10/100 is past its peak, IMHO.
10/100 is still completely serviceable for Internet & small stuff.
10/100/1000 (Gigabit) is ascending - tons of multi-Megabyte digital photos, for example.
NetGear has GS105 and GS108 unmanaged 5 and 8 port gigabit switches for < $50.
Still working / expanding typical existing 10/100 LANs?
Or, time to work on migrating / upgrading to 10/100/1000 ?
Consider each environment separately.
