Vista to XP is an upgrade. I had to reformat twice because of unrecoverable OS not found errors with Vista. Never had that problem with XP. I'd pay $50 to avoid that hassle.

However, it [Dell] will still be able to ship PCs with XP by taking advantage of the downgrade rights built into Vista Business and Vista Ultimate. Downgrading lets Dell install Windows XP Professional in lieu of Vista, although the newer operating system is still shipped with the machine so that buyers can, if or when they want, transition from XP to Vista

So basically, it's to cover the cost of including Vista Business and Ultimate with the cheaper laptops affected by the surcharge. Those cheaper laptops would otherwise come with Vista basic. Seems like a fair deal to me.

Vista was a waste of Microsoft's time in my opinion - let's look beyond it, things are moving online, not so much of an operating system is needed now.

My XP Pro install was done December 24th, 2006. Still going strong.

I've had my vista install for over a year, even upgraded to SP1. No problems. PEBKAC

I've been using Vista for over a year with no real issues.

I too have installed/used vista on a number of computers and haven't had any huge problems. The only problems that I have are incompatibility with programs on vista x64.

The real people this hurts is corporations, most companies dont want to go to vista and perhaps windows 7 is an option but we always downgrade.

Bingo. Corporations will not move to Vista any time soon. Server 2008 would have to be a solid presence before Vista even starts to roll out for most corporations.

I noted the 50$ charge yesterday when we quoted out some laptops. Not too pleased.

It really depends on what you do with it. If you're just a browser and an emailer, it's fine. If you use anything like MS Office, business web apps, or do any kind of gaming, you'll see Vista's failure. Why does Access 2007 run 4x slower than Access 2003 on a machine that's twice a powerful?

that has more to do with access 2007 then it does with vista

Excel 2007 runs like shit on vista and XP for me (same comp), i just went back to 2003

and ive been running vista 64 for a while and have never had an issue with any apps or games or Nvidia drivers, everyone was QQing about Nvidia drivers and Vista, mine were always working fine

I disagree Windows Vista 64 bit here works just as well as Windows XP for gaming and everything. Gaming performance is now on par with XP.

That's not Vista's fault, it's Office's. I can hardly run Outlook 2007 at work on XP Pro with a P4 2.8GHz and 512MB of RAM, but Word and Excel fly at home on Vista x64 with a C2D at 3.5 GHz and 6GB RAM.

There's a huge disparity in systems, but if you were to believe the hype each one is perfectly fine with the installed OS. One can handle Office '07 the other can't.
