Dell U2711 and Intel HD Graphics 4600 res. issue

I recently upgraded my system and my new motherboard has Intel HD Graphics 4600. Problem is a connection via HDMI will only out 1080p output (limitation of the monitor) although supported by the graphics chip. In the manual of the monitor, its clearly mentioned that display port and DVI dual link are the only options for achieving the native resolution i.e. 2560x1440. Although my monitor has a displayport my motherboard doesnt have it so the display port option is out. DVI-DVI connection is outputting only 1680x1050 resolution. What's the best way to go about this? Will a HDMI to displayport cable solve the problem? HDMI side will be connected to the motherboard and displayport end to the monitor. The board outputs 2560x1440@60hz via HDMI and the monitor also supports 2560x1440@60hz via displayport input. Does this make sense?

Sounds like you are using a single link DVI cable. You will need a dual link DVI cable to output 2560x1440.

Motherboard manual says a max resolution of 1920 x 1200 60hz is supported via DVI-D connection.

Your mobo is the issue. The DVI is a singlelink on your mobo.

I guess you need a HDMI to Duallink DVI cable of some sort.

Wow really? I just looked up the motherboard manual and didn't find a reference to single link.

The easiest way around seems like getting a 260X by investing an additional $100.

I briefly tried the onboard graphics on my Gigabyte Z87-D3HP and I could not get it to run 1600p either. I'm not saying it doesn't work because I couldn't be bothered to research it more, but that was my experience. Maybe its an implementation issue and lazy manufacturers?

Some also say you need an active adaptor for the duallink DVI aprt, due to the passive just sending the data to one channel.

There is also the HDMI to displayport cables as well. They should be more reliable since both standards per default supports the resolution.

HDMI on most devices right now will not output more than 1920x1200. Also if using HDMI in the monitor end, on Dells that only goes up to 1080p. I doubt you'll get it working with an adapter cable.

I went for GTX970 (ASUS STRIX), but that's midrange. I was looking for a replacement for my 5870 LCS which died and only need the onboard while I wait for the new one to arrive.

You're right. That did not work. I guess I have no option but to force buy myself a new graphics card.

This will not help. His motherboard has no output capable for 1440p.

He needs a graphics card, although a low end model (probably less than $50) will probably suffice as long as it has DL-DVI or DP.

Is 2560x1600 a typo? Because if you're running it a U2711 at that res, it's not the native resolution.

Hmmm. I seriously doubt a DVI cable is going to help. Have you tried all the settings in the Dell OSD? It is likely that or a Windows setting. It might be useful to boot a Linux live CD or something so that you can determine whether the issue is software or hardware.

Are you using Cleartype? If so, you may need to re-run it.

Fuzzy pixelated text sounds like it could be a driver issue. Did you uninstall the Intel video drivers, and do a clean Nvidia driver install?

Also, since you're using the GeForce 730, make sure to fully turn off the onboard video. You may also need to check the motherboard BIOS to make sure the PCIe slot your 730 is plugged into is getting its full bandwidth, and that the PCIe slot itself is not being overclocked or anything (usually not possible on Dells, but still good to check those settings).
