Tiger Direct has Dell Ultrasharp 1800FP LCDs for $499, best price I can find anywhere on them by a good deal. With coupons, etc the best price from Dell is $611 right now I believe.

These are "factory recertified" though, which according to the page means someone ordered the monitor then refused to accept it when it shipped, and can't be sold as "new" after that.

I ordered one and it is scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

Does anybody know what their policy is, on recertified stuff, when it comes to dead pixels?

I would wait for more deals in which for $50-$70 more, you can the original thing from Dell. Also didn't lots of people have problems with tiger direct? They are supposed to be really bad when it comes to returns so I would be more careful.

just to mention it as a mild warning: i recall hearing complaints about tigerdirect several times. they're a legit business and all that, but they reportedly have some non-customer friendly policies. i think that this had to do with returning merchandise. sorry i can't be more specific than that.

since the monitors are dell manufactured and recertified by them, i'd think these would be just as good as new... as opposed to "refurbished", which makes me nervous when ordering pricier things.

note the ONE month manufacturer's warranty on parts... and you have to send in a S.A.S.E. to Tigerdirect to get a printed copy of the manufacturer's warranty. prolly can get it online, too.

anyway, just keep in mind that you're not buying a new Dell product from Dell, and the experience could differ. looks like a nice deal if you're all good with those things

I am reading anandtech with this monitor right now. Got mine from dell for $560 ..but may send it back, undecided. i also have a new dell 17" LCD right beside it.

18" Ultrasharp
pros :
screen light evenly distributed
solid feel
no ghosting in UT2003
nice, effecient buttons.
DVI... i guess.... my GF4 has no DVI out. maybe when i get my new GeforceFX in the mail

cons:
100% brightness is just about right. no room to go over.
this monitor is not compatable with Windows Cleartype. looks horrid. Cleartype looks great on the 17" LCD next to it.
large and heavy (18 pounds) compared the 17" LCD (11 pounds).
1 stuck pixel in lower right quadrant noticeable as dark blue on black backgrounds.

Not to thread-poop but I've heard of numerous people having TigerDirect sell their cc#'s to some phone company who then bills you like $40 a month for phone service. I personally would never buy from TD. I know of another 'deals' site that refuses to even list deals from TD because of this. YMMV.

I have heard the exact same thing regrading TogerDirect - They sell your billing information to others.

Not really a hot deal. I got the Dell 1900FP 19" LCD a few weeks back for $899-20% off- $45 off $400 - 3% FC - $100 price adjustment which came down to ~$540. That was the deal of the year IMO from Dell next to the awesome desktops they were offering for $200 after rebates...

I realize there have been similarly hot prices lately, but right now this is the cheapest as far as I know.

I got mine today and it was $537 total with 2nd day shipping. I'm using it right now and it's in perfect condition so all is good. No dead pixels, etc. As for the quality of the monitor itself I must say I love it. The ability to switch between DVI and analog inputs with one button is cool too and means my server now has a screen hooked up to it.

As for the return policy, it came with a paper about that: 30 days for defective exchanges, though it says you have to have a defective confirmation code from the manufacturer (personally not sure if this is common or not). Non-defective exchanges are subject to a 15% restocking fee and return is at their discretion it says. So take that for whatever it's worth.

I hadn't heard about them selling billing info, but thanks for hte head's up, I'll keep an eye out.

Anyway, I'm happy with this purchase. It's the cheapest I've ever seen this monitor (closest was $516 last week for one day, with a combo of coupons and rebates) though it is recertified (note, not refurbished).
