Hard to say. AMVA is a new tech based on VA panels, and while VA definitely had drawbacks, the contrast ratio was definitely better than IPS. The main drawbacks were viewing angles and lack of 8/10 bit color support. Apparently, this is changing with the AMVA 4k panels although I could be wrong. It's what i've heard, but we won't know for sure until Q1 2014.

Plasma definitely has drawbacks preventing it's use on traditional monitors. Namely, the power consumption is even higher than that of CRTs of the past. That said, i'm still a huge fan of plasma for HDTVs. LED can't really come close to plasma in terms of contrast ratios and responsiveness.

Unfortunately, plasma was recently discontinued, though.

Are you talking about Panasonic discontinuing research? They will still sell TVs, but it seems all hope of a 4k plasma is lost. Oh well. I'm interested in 4K due to the high PPI at ~30"-40" for monitor purposes. I think 4k is pretty pointless for a living room setting. I can't see myself moving away from my plasma for 8+ years.

I want them to come out, not so that I can get one, but, so there will be pressure on video cards to reach that level of performance. Then I'll get one.

Is 16:9 going to be the ratio going forward? Just noticing a trend with 1440 and 2160 in these 27"+ displays...

I don't think 4k will be worth investing in before then anyway. Look at how many programs are broadcast in 1080p with 5.1 sound right now. Actually I'd prefer they focus on giving us better audio but that's another topic.

I too like plasma and wish there was a focus on higher resolution for Plasma going forward because of the benefits Plasma enjoys over LCD in terms of picture quality. Granted there are some issues that occur on Plasma that LCD tech doesn't always have but they are relatively minor to me.

Indeed I am.

Plasma R+D has ceased as of December last year, Panasonic's newest Plasma - the ZT60 - is the last one that will ever be produced. I'm guessing plasma wasn't able to do 4k or whatever and since that's what all other panel makers are focusing on (for the LONG TERM...) they ceased production. They're switching to OLED but OLED has problems of it's own, so we'll see where Panasonic goes in the next few years.

That said, I like others here love plasma for HDTV's - as far as i'm concerned it is far better than LED for a bigscreen. But for the long term, it's pretty much a certaintly that 4k will be mainstream. At some point. Not this year, maybe not next, but it will be at some undetermined time in the future. Such is how technology moves - everyone is hesitant at first, the same happened with 720p and 1080p. But once prices hit the right spot, everyone will switch.

Just need 3 Titans to drive that now lol

Single GPU gaming on 4K is probably a good 5 years away even on a $1000 GPU budget.

I would hope the monitor's image processor would detect 1080p and double everything without doing anything else to the image.

I think netflix just started doing 1080p (they call it "super HD") on select movies, but I'm unsure what the bitrate is so it may just be up-ressed 720p content without any added quality. I don't mind LCD for gaming on, but movies look much more natural on plasma to me. I agree about the sound. I have a 5.1 setup and some movies are great with it while others simply chirp birds in the background so they can put 5.1 on the box.

My biggest pet peeve with LCD screens are the terrible backlight uniformity of most screens. Plasma, however, doesn't have this issue at all.

From what I read the cell size would be too small to make 4k at consumer sizes. I believe panasonic made a 100"+ 4k plasma, but they did it by bolting 4x1080p screens together. Again, I'm not too worried as I sit ~15' away from my TV. 4K doesn't benefit me for a TV. There is the content issue as well. PC's don't have to worry too much about the content issue because most newer games will run at 4k. I'm looking forward to replacing my multi-monitor 1440p setup for a nice 30-32" 4k display.

My dream set up would have 120hz 4k IPS/PLS G-sync lol.

Yeah on the pc you can run almost any resolution you want. These days. That's the biggest benefit I see for the PC when higher resolution displays arrive.

Also makes you wonder since you dont need 2 titans. I have 3 30" 8050 x 1600 and 2 titans are fine. What does make you wonder, would a 4k 32" make more sense than 3 30"...

Randomly came across this Korean website posting some pictures and info on the Dell U3414Q 4K monitor.

http://avenuel.tistory.com/1935

Interestingly on the table on the bottom there is a U2414Q 24" 4K monitor?!

No thanx. Why would they go that small? Why not a 27"? I used to own a 15" Thinkpad with a 1920x1080 resolution. Almost every time someone looked over my shoulder using it, they asked how I could read anything on the screen. I have better eyes than most of the people I know, and I had no problem using it, but I wouldn't want to go any higher res than that on a screen that size. That's roughly a 147 DPI screen. A 4k 24" screen would be about 184 DPI. Understanding how piss poor windows is at scaling, I don't know anyone who would be able to use a screen like that for anything but gaming. You would go blind trying to do anything productive. 4k is ideally suited to a screen 30" or larger. At 30" it has the same DPI as a 15" 1080p screen.

Well at least they used a new stand. The Asus and Sharp monitors were identical down to the last component. The only difference was the trim.

In a world where only a couple members shell out $1k+ on gaming cards, how many will buy this monitor?
