Hi all,

What would you pick for the best all around monitor? And why?

Samsung looks to be a little better I think.

The biggest problem with the U2412M is the antiglare coating. If you check out some of the reviews, you'll see people complain about it. It's prevalent when looking at a white background, though how close you are to the monitor impacts it. For me, it almost disappears after moving about two feet or so away from it with smaller amounts of white. Larger amounts, it'll still be noticeable. If you're sticking with Dell, I would wait until they update the model or make sure the monitor is pushed back. If you like to sit close, you won't be happy with it.

The coating is exactly the same as the PA248Q. I first ordered the ASUS and returned it due to the fairly pronounced backlight bleeding and red push on half the screen that I couldn't correct. May have just been the monitor I received, but I didn't want to take the chance and bought a Dell U2412m. Very uniform panel (no noticeable backlight bleeding) and it actually seemed a bit more responsive in gaming - although either is just fine for all but the most competitive FPSer. As far as the AG coating goes I sit about 24 to 28 inches from the screen and after two months I no longer even see it. I did buy a colormeter (after I returned the ASUS) and the whites on the Dell on really good properly calibrated. I would highly recommend it - one of the best monitors for the price.

I hear sooooooooooooo many mixed reviews about both monitors that it is not funny

Wondering if I should just go with a cheap 23 inch monitor that is decent for gaming and text reading and wait until something really good comes along that covers all the bases.

I've come to the conclusion buying a monitor is a crap shoot. I just lucked out this time (after sending two other makes/models back to Newegg).

My vision is pretty good, so I can sit back about three feet away and I can still see the coating on the whites. I don't have anything to calibrate it with, so maybe that comes into play. The brightness was also at 75% along with contrast, and lowering the brightness does help as well. What do you have yours set to?

I have my brightness on 50% which seems to be a good compromise for day and night in the room I have it in. I did see it a bit at first, but again, after a while I adjusted and "stopped" seeing it - even on pages like this one (that are pretty light). My old monitor was a glossy TN and it was the same way - at first I saw the reflections all the time and eventually my mind sort of tuned them out. Have pretty good vision - a little better than 20/20.

I guess it depends on the individual and how sensitive they are to such things. I can get used to any monitor... except one with massive backlight bleeding! The main thing is to buy from a retailer that won't give you crap about returns or soak you with restocking fees. It does take a few weeks of use to know if a fairly strong matte finish or a glossy screen will suit a person.

You know what?

I will take a chance and get the cheaper Asus Pa238q and hope for the best.

If I get one that is mostly good I can live with that until something better comes along in the future.

Wish me luck

You need a 1ms monitor so FPS games are instant mouse no lag and no motion blur or ghosting.

2ms or higher will have mouse lag and not be instant mouse, it will ahve motion blur and ghosting unless you turn off Vsync then you get ugly tears a more accurate mouse but still get the blur and ghosting. gl

Watch the latency times on the monitor. If it is not 1ms and its 2ms it will have lag, mouse lag in FPS games you have to turn off vsync.

People actually reply to tweakboy's posts? No offense to anyone intended, but it seems a bit of a waste of time
