Yeah, but this post was from way back last month when we still thought the Earth was flat and the stars in the sky were Gods.

You're welcome

I too thought this was an important update on a product many seemed interested in.

The update is welcome.
Just there was a newer thread about the Dell Venue tablets.

I'm definitely excited about this 8 inch tablet, even if it's just 1280x800.

Updated the title. Would have updated the thread sooner, but yeah, Dell released a number of products at the same time and there is a newer thread on all of them together.

Really excited for the Venue 8 Pro. I have a 2013 Nexus 7, but there's some much more I would be able to do on a Windows 8 tablet, and $300 is a great price for an 8" Windows device.

Icon size and DPI is adjustable. But metro interface is where you'll want to spend most of your time if you want to use it in traditional tablet mode.

There is also the desktop program TouchMousePointer which turns your tablet touch screen into one big mouse touch pad like what laptops sport.

Internal storage is too low for a full blown Windows machine. Right now I have 64GB of used space on this computer, and that's without any games or music/picture/video collection either. Android tablets and iPads can get by with 32GB of storage because the OS and apps don't take up as much space. What good is 32GB with a full fledged Windows installation?

And the mSD does not count for anything more than media storage, good luck running applications off of a mSD at respectable speeds.

If you have a "collection", it doesn't belong on a tablet of any type. It gets streamed to it.

I think disk space is one of the least important specs of a mobile device. At least until the point at which we get them with multiple hundreds of GBs on board, then you might be able to make a case for a true all-in-one. But until that point, the practicality of 32/64/128/whatever is roughly all the same imo. You can likely fit pretty much all your programs and apps no problem and past that it's a matter of picking and choosing a small selection of media that you want handy for the rest of the space.

As I said I currently have no media or games installed on this computer and I've taken up 64GB of my 128GB (SSD). 32GB of storage space is plenty for Android or iOS, but I don't think that's the case with full fledged Windows.

OR with the expandable media options, media are placed there (USB thumbdrives, SD cards, etc).

I feel adequate with 128GB of SSD space. Even have a micro SD card for some Steam games. But at 256GB, it is pretty much all I will every need given the programs I sport on my Envy 14 up into the present with my Surface Pro.

Anything less, you can place a few alternative browsers, handfuls of light space desktop programs, and try the Windows Store app market.

Well I'm talking about the 8" Venue which only has 32GB of space, not the bigger Venue that's more like the Surface. Would you be okay with only 32GB of storage with Windows 8?

I have also gotten an Acer W3-810 32GB. I knew what I was getting into. It serves as a very light, very small Windows workstation with not much installed other than some machining programs. Built in screen, no need for a hard keyboard, very small and non space taking.

Of 28.4GB of total reported space in File Explorer, 6.6GB is free.

Yes, because it would be most cost effective for me to have this encompassing device, with screen, with the base storage for programs as such, and for the price at the smallest footprint.

Of course, I would be also just as well with a netbook, both are the same price, but I am saddled with a VERY small touchpad versus a LARGE touchscreen that CAN double as a touchpad.

Assuming the new Skydrive integration works as advertised then I don't see why not. I moved all my big media to streaming years ago. Most metro apps are very lightweight.

I am assuming this comes with Office, right? Most of the smaller Win 8.1 tablets are supposed to now.

I think I'm fine with the 32GB of storage. I assume Windows will take up half or maybe a bit more of that leaving around 15GB or so of C: space. But I also have a 64GB micro SD card that will be my D: drive. I can move the location of My Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Videos, and such to the D: drive. I can probably free up some more C: space by killing the shrinking the paging file and killing the hibernation file.

Android isn't free. I believe that for each android device sold...MS reaps like $15-$20 just from patents.

And yeah, Android tablets suck. I have one. It sucks.

I also have the Acer W3-810 32GB. Awesome little tablet. Have full office pro installed along with a couple metro apps/games. I also use it to test some windows 8 apps from visual studio. HDMI out along with a sd slot makes for a little handy device. Chromecast also works pretty well with it using Chrome as the browser. Still have little over 3GB left.

My only complaint is the screen quality. Its flat out bad. This alone will make me sell it and probably pick up the Dell Venue 8 Pro 8". I'm looking forward to it though!

You can disable pagefile and hiberfile to gain a few GB's. Did this on my HP 32 GB Elitepad without any ill effects.

Problem with only 3 gb left is the windows winSxS file will eat into that rapidly.

This thing will be about as successful as the Motorola Xoom (my predictions).

Can you elaborate? I don't really think of the Xoom as a success or failure. So I'm not sure which way you are going with that.

That really is brutal. 6.6 GB of storage from day one? Shoot, I have 15 GB or so of music on my 920 alone. I'd like to see my next Windows Phone have a microSD that doens't lock to the device (I know WP7 cards locked to a device, not sure if WP8 ones do). That way, I could have a media microSD card that I could pop into the appropriate device, as needed.

I don't care for spending $10/month on a cellular connection with AT&T, so the "cloud" isn't really a fix for my habits, but that's me.

How are you supposed to use desktop windows on a 8" tablet? Did they hire monkeys to make this thing?
