Thanks. If I buy an adapter, would the PSU be sufficient to run the card? What other decent video card can pair with this system then?

It probably is. In theory you can run any card that does not require more than one adapter. However, you'll be running pretty close to max-ing out the PSU.

Grrrrrrrr! Do I get this now and switch out the PSU for one I already have or do I build my own midrange PC? I can't decide!

Weirdichi, do you already have a spare OS license and a monitor? If so, you are probably better off building your own. If you need Vista and a monitor, then the Dell is the best deal going, since you are basically getting a decent dual-core computer for about $100 (the monitor+vista are worth over $300).

Try here. Looks the same to me. The options are the same and it's $95 cheaper without the monitor.

You can, but you will lose discounts. You'll end up saving around $50-100. May as well take the monitor and then sell it (or your old monitor). You'll end up ahead.

You'll lose the discount on the monitor, but not the computer. It starts at $324 without the monitor.

I do agree with Zap that it's a better deal with the monitor, however.

I actually have another XP Pro and an old 19" CRT that I can use. I was pricing out the FreeOS version and it came to about $350 total with tax and SH. The one here is about $530 with tax and free SH. So selling the monitor and ram would be about $220 less and I'd have the same system with minor tweaks (1gb more ram, media reader, Vista OS) which I could probably live without. It's the selling of the monitor that might be a hassle.

I'm thinking of trying to get a budget gaming machine for around $300, but all I have in parts right now is the RAM. I was thinking about a shuttle SFF box as well, but the processor in those aren't that great for around my price range. I'm not gonna be pushing the limits with full settings on any game so I'm thinking this might be a good system and I don't have to hassle myself with building a computer (which I probably wouldn't mind, but it would save me time).

What to do?

You're essentially trying to do the same thing as I am, but I've got a spare PSU and no OS.

Was thinking about jumping on this, then I priced out the parts for a new system at Newegg for $365 shipped with $45 in mail-in rebates and a free Radeon 2400 Pro. I expect my total cost will be around $295 after selling the video card.

The Dell was like $493 after tax and shipping. That means I would need to get around $200 for the monitor to match the price of system I put together on Newegg, and I just don't see that happening very easily. The going price on eBay seems to be right around $200 w/free shipping, then you have to ship it, then eBay takes their cut, and if you use Paypal they take theirs. There's always a chance that you might find a sucker on Craigslist, but I live in Oklahoma and have never had much luck using CL here.

As for what I actually got on Newegg:

Rosewill R5605-BK
Intel E5200
ZOTAC LGA775 MB
2GB DDR2-800
80GB SATA HDD
DVD+-R
OCZ 700W PSU

I'm happy. Just thought I'd share since it sounds like you're in a similar situation to mine.

I haven't seen any of these go for $200 on Fleabay. Not with an E7400; not even close. If you choose the 2208WFP and a couple of the other cheap upgrades like Vista Home Premium for $29 to bring it to $499, it ships for free, and you're essentially getting the 2208WFP for $135, which is a great price for a quality 22" TN panel. And it comes standard with a 160GB HDD, not 80GB, and you can upgrade to 250GB for $10. And you didn't mention having to buy Windows, either, which is a significant chunk of change.

qliveur, I think he was referring to just the monitor.

Like I said, if you don't need the LCD or OS, then you should build your own. But you simply can't build a comparable machine yourself for $450 shipped that includes Vista and a 22" LCD.

Even using the absolute cheapest components on Newegg, the lowest I could come up with was still about $550 shipped.

I would never advocate a Dell at higher price points, but for <$500, this is an unbeatable deal.

Yes, I was talking about selling the monitor on eBay for those who don't need it. Recent completed listings seem to be right around $200 with free shipping.

However, if you have an extra XP or Vista key and don't want the hassle of selling off the LCD, it is possible to put together a similar system on Newegg to match the Dell deal in overall cost. Since there was a poster in the same situation as me, I thought I would share.

Oh, and the cost to upgrade the hard drive to 160GB on Newegg - $7, or $13 more for 250GB. I simply chose an 80GB drive because that's all I need.

Can you PM me the setup? I haven't even been in the computer building sector in a while so I really have no idea where to even start. The last one I built was an AMD Sempron machine a few years ago.

It's still there if you browse to the Vostro 220 from the main Dell site, but Zap's link doesn't work for some reason (the URL I was taken to to get the deal is the same as the one he posted).

Why not? AFAIK if you receive something you didn't pay for, you can keep it. I once dealt with that when shipping a printer to a client. UPS delivered it to wrong address, and paid our claim for it. They told us something about them legally not being able to recover it.

More recently at BFG a water cooled GTX 280 was mis-delivered (for an RMA). We still had to provide the guy a working card, and we weren't able to get the other card back (don't know if UPS paid claims or not). So, some little old lady out there is staring at a BFG GTX 280 H2OC and wondering what the heck it is.

Then again if you want to keep your karma slate clean, just call up Dell.

For those who have owned the Dell Vostro 220 for a while, any complaints?

How is overall noise level and does it wake from sleep properly?

Also, does Windows 7 RC1 work properly?

Nonsense. I built a much better rig for cheaper. For the OS use Windows 7 RC. When that expires then you can figure out what to use next.
