For those of you thinking about purchasing a vostro 220s. Please keep in mind that there may be some misinformation spread about these systems. I purchased one of these because I thought that it had standard ATX power supply with standard PCI express ports. It was my mistake and I should have known better but I have heard from the forums that these systems were upgradeable. The system only has a 250 WATT power supply (part #: tfx0250d5wb) and is proprietary (I think); if somebody knows if its upgradeable PLEASE let me know!!), so good luck finding a PSU that has a higher wattage. I am thinking about purchasing a Apollo AP- HD4650LP Radeon HD 4650 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16. This card only consumes 75 WATTS so i might be able to eek by with the current PSU. If it doesnt, I am going to ditch the case and buy a new one, the thing is useless to me if I can't get a discrete graphics card.

You might be ok. I spent a week testing the power usage of my computer with a P3 Kill-A-Watt.

Q6600@3.0 (power hog)
Radeon 4850 overclocked
1 x 1TB Samsung HD

Power Off : 2W (heh)
Boot Up: Spikes to 180W
Idle: 120-140W
CPU load: 220W (Prime torture test)
GPU load: 240W (ATItool artifact test)

I just checked a PSU calculator and it recommended a 259 Watt PSU. I think I might be able to eek by....
BTW Based on some reviews the card (ATI HD4650) can pull 30 FPS with Company of Heroes 1680x1050
25 FPS World in Conflict HIGH setting 1680x1050
Referenced from here
Based on this I am going to purchase this GPU, seems to be the fastest you can buy with the Slim Form Factor and the current PSU @ 250 watts

Anybody think this would be an easy path to an HTPC? If you sell the monitor, that leaves you with mobo, memory, CPU, case, PSU and OS for about $250 or so, which isn't bad. Add another $300 or so for graphics, sound, blu-ray and larger storage, and you're on your way. That is, unless you would be limited by the PSU or something else. Comes out maybe $50-$100 less than DIY for similar components. Thoughts?

i did it with a vostro 200 slim -- no complaints

actually stuck a 9600gt low profile card in there (made by sparkle)

definitely running ok on what i think is supposed to be a 250w supply

it is serving as an htpc/media server/multi-room audio server for the house

just replaced the optical with a blu-ray
stuck in 8gb of ram
vista x64 ultimate

it may have been better to DIY; but I think the vostro cases are much sleeker than most of the htpc cases available (without spending $300 on the case alone)

Butter14, it should have been obvious that a slim system like that could not come with a full size power supply. There's always trade-offs with a small form factor like that.

With that said, it does seem that the Dell slims would be perfect for an htpc. It's hard to buy a case that looks that nice. BTW you can also find these on Ebay as barebones.
