Dell vs Sony Monitor?

I just got a new dell computer, Now I need the monitor. I'm looking at a Dell P1130 21" or the
Sony CPD G520P 21". Which one is better? I know there are both Trinitrons.

I'm pretty sure that Dell don't manufacture monitors so it's likely to be something else, rebranded.

Check the product specs for both monitors. Get the cheaper one as long as it does a high refresh rate at the resolution you intend to use.

They might even be the same. I'm almost sure my 17 inch Trinitron is a rebadged Sony.

Sony owns the 'Trinatron' name - Dell has Sonys made into their case specs for appearance.

MaximumPC has always loved Sony monitors; I can't remember the sepcific model, but it's been given good reviews for a few years now.
My own personal preference is with Nokia monitors - I have a Multigraph 447XPro. Nokia sold their monitor division to Viewsonic, so I'd expect the quality to be there too.

Dells Trinitrons are monitors that use Sony's tube. It's basically the same as a Sony, but the model is hard to tell.
From looking at the pic and description on this, I would say that it is either the same or very similar to the Dell P1110, except it's in a black color instead of the normal beige/white.

I have the Dell P1110 and it's a great monitor. It's comparable to the CPD-G520 (same tube) so it's definitely a decent monitor at a good price.

Dell uses Sony tubes. So buy whichever is cheapest as they are the same minus the logo

The problem with sony/dell monitors, compared to viewsonic or nec/mitsu for example, is the durability and life expectancy. Most sony monitors will fade, wear, die, crack, etc, after a minimum of 2 years. Most go out in the 3 year range. More people are moving to viewsonic for example, because they are cheaper, and last longer. I moved from two sony/dell p991's to two viewsonic p95f+B's. I will never personally go back to a sony. NOW, sony makes some fantastic monitors, but their expensive as heck, and wear out after some time. If i were you, i would try to get on board another monitor aside from sony/dell.

stebesplace, I've never had a single Sony monitor go bad on me, the only reason I ever bought a newer Sony monitor was as a screen-size upgrade, not because anything went wrong w/ it. I've had a G400 for years w/o issues, I suppose YMMV.

I work for Philips BU Monitors. We manufacture monitors for Dell. Philips is one of many Dell's OEMs. To be honest with you, under the same specs, the lowest price wins the business. Philips doesn't manufacture tubes anymore, we buy from CRT vendors. So, Trinitron is the patent of Sony. It is highly possible that an OEM buys tube from Snoy and manufacture for Dell.

I have a 17" sony (6 years old) and now a 19" sony (2.5 years old). They have had zero problems. Both have been used very heavily. All of my friends have bought "cheaper" monitors and they have each been through at least two. Mine are still going strong. I have never heard of any problems with sony's durability and life expectancy. In fact, I have only heard positive things (except, of course, the price). Where did you hear this information from? Oh and BTW, NEC monitors are horrible. We have at least 600 of them at work and they fail regularly. We are not purchasing them anymore.

I feel stebesplace is mistaken. The reason people tend not to buy as many Sony monitors is because they cost more, but the reliability is out of this world. I do feel that Sony has an incredible attention to detail and I have sold many many Sony monitors and none of them have ever had any problems. All the other monitors I have seen have some big flaw or die early, but not Sony monitors. Since the monitor is where you always look when using the computer, I recommend spending the extra and getting the Sony.
