Dell WideScreen LCD woes

I bought the Dell 2005 FPW LCD (reviewed here on anandtech a few months ago). The monitor is awesome for everything...except in twitch games like Counter-Strike etc. The monitor is going back tomorrow. The blurring is very noticeable and very annoying to me after a while. It looks like ripples running across the screen. Now, I'm looking for a smaller LCD (19" minimum) which will be more than acceptable for gaming. Would a 6ms response time be equivalent to what CRTs can do? Is the Hyundai L90D+ the answer to my prayers?

Ripples running across the screen kinda sounds like tearing to me. Are you sure you're running the game with Vsync on?

With that said, the monitor is not completely free of ghosting (I own one), but it is pretty minimal. It bothers some people more than others though.

Yeah, my guess is that it has something to do with tearing. Perhaps it's just more obvious with the higher resolution. Try turning down the detail if you want to keep it at its native resolution.

Ya that definitely sounds like V Sync is disabled... Almost everyone that owns the monitor knows ghosting is virtually non exisitant.

I'll 3rd the Vsync theory. Also, if a fast paced game isn't running at the monitors native resolution it can cause tearing. Enable Vsync before sending it back. That monitor should be able to handle just about any game you throw at it with no blurring.

Thanks for all your replies. !
I did turn on VSYNC and turned all details way down (9800 Pro video card). Still felt that things blurred when turning quickly in FPS games. !

Any alternate monitor suggestions?

Also, is it true that VSync limits your frames per second to 60 or so ? (or your monitor "refresh" rate ...which I understand does not mean much for LCDs).

*Confused*

if you are that sensitive to lcd blur no lcd will satisfy you. crt is sub ms response. quoted lcd response is only for black to white. shades of color are several times worse.

Do note that if you go for the models with a faster response time, then you're almost guaranteed to get a 6bit panel rather than an 8bit one, and those are capable of less than 2% of the color reproduction of 8bit panels.

thanks, 0roo and Goi. I think I'm going to end up buying a CRT. There are NO reviews to be found these days for CRTs however (except from buyers on newegg). I'd love to buy a fast, 8 bit LCD panel with 0 pixel defects with no backlight bleeding (btw, thats another thing I didnt like in the FPW 2005).

It's tough to find good CRTs now too. Your best bet would be a refurb'ed FDTrinitron or DiamondTronNF. Those are the best CRT tubes ever made.

I just ordered the ViewSonic G220FB from newegg and a new 6800 GT (e-vga) vid card. **Rubs hands in glee***

Thanks for all your help.

Yeah, even with vsync on I still get the tearing on mine. I also see the blur right away...and it is a disadvantage for sure.

Good luck with your CRT
