Dell XPS 15 - Thoughts

Hey folks,

So I've been doing a ton of research for the last two months, and I've ultimately settled on buying the Dell XPS 15 as my next laptop.

Unfortunately, the quality control on these laptops seems SO painfully bad, that every single mention of the XPS 15 on every forum I've been to has been negative. Everyone says the laptop is good, but I've yet to come across anyone who has received their unit without flaws.

Have any of you bought and received the Dell XPS 15, and received a unit without flaws? Can anyone give a positive review, showing that at least some people are in fact having a good experience with it?

Do you guys think it's genuinely not worth it at this point to buy the XPS 15 until Dell's quality control has been improved?

Would love to know your thoughts.

This post is my opinion based on what I've seen/read on some forums.

I still don't have access to mine but, except the space bar problem, I'm not sure how many of the issues are actually Dell's QC fault and how many are just early adopters problems (because some of the issues are shared with the Surface Pro 4).

There are issues with the trackpad which are solved by switching to the synaptic driver, some issues with the screen which are Intel 520 (530? whatever) issues including some issues which were solved by disabling Hyper-V and some power management problems which were solved by a BIOS update.

From all I've heard though - the speakers are trash. I don't mind because I never use laptop speakers, I'm always with headphones/connected to home speakers.

Yeah, I've read that a lot of the issues people have been experiencing are due to drivers. If that's the case, then it's not a huge problem simply because they -will- be fixed and everything will be updated if it hasn't already.

The hardware issues I've come across have included problems with the space bar, the main body not being flush with the aluminum frame at the bottom near the touch pad, and the keyboard just outright not working (which could be software-related).

Well here is my experience.. I7 256gb model. Bought it because I was told I can add another HD. Well I can't because dell doesn't ship the cable to connect a 2.5 inch drive with the laptop. So I only have a 256gb pcie drive.

Mine is at the dell repair depot. It should be shipped back to me hopefully soon.

Why? Speakers crackle and rattle inside the case, screen flickering. I uninstalled and reinstalled all drivers. Dell wanted me to to a factory reset.

Couldn't do it because the laptop shipped with a broken recovery partition. They sent me a recovery windows 10 USB and told me that would reinstall the OS and everything else.

That USB says recovery drive/partition not found. Dell had me ship the laptop to their repair depot. Its been a little over a week now. I just hope it doesn't come back without any issues.

I just couldn't stand how the speakers crackle only when turning up volume from the taskbar. Then if you turn them up, you hear them rattle inside the case.

The machine is fast, build quality is great but they have some major QC issues over there.
