Dell's Challenge to DV1000

getting antsy about buy a laptop. although i was set on the dv1000, there was some news about dell coming out with a 14'' wxga to challenge the dv1000 and v2000 so i wanted to wait. but it's been a few months now and dell's been hush about it. anybody hear anything recently?

Havent heard anything about it, but being at a school that pays to subsidize dell machines for students I have to say that dells are HORRIBLE. About 1 in 5 has some weird defect that constantly hampers the user and the support staff just DOES NOT know what to do. I would steer clear....go for the compaq or get a fujitsu. Newegg has some great instant rebates on the >4lbs Fujitsus!!

I own a hp zv and a dell 9100. I dont know how you can call dell horrible, I have never had problem with my laptop and alot of my friends who own them dont either.

We have around 30 Dell laptops in the field and I have yet to run into these horrible machines so many people talk about.

my whole school has 600ms, on pretty much every one of them the screen touches the keyboard when closed, which damages the screen.

my sis has a dell laptop, and it is indeed "horrible". it has no features, is thick, is ugly, audio sucks, and the fan is always on. for laptops, i have to recommend the hp's, since they run cool, have the best audio, looks great, and has many features.

At the risk of getting back to the original topic (-, here's what may be the source (or one of the sources) of the rumor:

Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - Taiwan

"Local sources reported that Wistron [ODM] received notebook PC orders from Dell ... Dell's notebook PC order is a 14.1-inch wide-screen, which will begin volume shipments at earliest time before yearend... However, Wistron declined to confirm the report."

Unfortunately, as deejay says, no news since. If anyone else has or can find out any more news regarding the potential dell 14? widescreen, it would be welcome - pls post? thanks

It seems that other companies were/are planning 14.1" widescreen laptops which will be based on Intel's Alviso chipset. (One source : http://www.dealerinfo.nl/2004/411/digiti.htm)

As you may know, the Alviso chipset has been delayed (until circa early 2005 as I understand it.)

If the new Dell is based on this chipset, that might explain why any announcments and/or the release has been delayed. If so, the good news (sort of is that this and other 14.1" widescreen laptops _might_ be coming in eaarly 2005.
