Hmmm...the price is $679 with CD writer, 80GB HDD, and 19 inch E196FP LCD (no DVI input). My cost for parts is around $580 but I suspect DELL's cost is just north of $500. Too bad one cannot overclock this CPU.
I can guarantee you Dell's cost is much, much lower.
But if you were building...
Case/PSU = $100
945P Motherboard = $95
CPU = $160
Memory = $78
Video card = $35
CDRW/DVD = $30
80GB SATA = $45
OS = $100
That's over $600 there, plus there is a 19in LCD, mouse, and keyboard.
you can do way better than that. an 820 chip is maybe $120 at most places. you can get them for $90 or so on ebay.
a half decent case / psu is not $100. you can even get pretty good cases from a brand name for $50 with a psi. same with the ram, decent quality ddr2 1gb is about $45-50.
and the OS being xp home, oem is like $70 or less not $100.
But it is not a half-decent case, nor a half-decent power supply. The power supply could actually run a couple of 7900 GT's in SLI, not that the motherboard supports it. The case is extremely well-design. I've worked with a LOT of ATX cases on the market, and there are no $50 cases that even compare with this case. Now attractiveness is a preference, so I'm ignoring that. The case has a lot of very nice features inside, check out the pics I linked to above.
You're right about the cpu. In fact, a 930 would be a much better buy at ~$175 retail.
I'd like to see where you can get some 1GB kits of DDR2 for $45-50, and XP Home for $70. I'm currently paying $82 for Home OEM, and ~$145 for 2GB kits of DDR2 (corsair). The Dell will include either Samsung, Infineon, or Micron.
Even still that deal included the 19in LCD as well as a mouse/keyboard.
