Thank god, having to bring an animal with you on a flight (or anywhere else) is not sane, adult behavior. They’re animals.


Rather than wait for federal regulation, Delta Air Lines unveiled its own tighter rules Friday for passengers flying with emotional-support animals that increasingly disrupt flights.

The rules come as the airline carries about 700 assistance animals each day that the carrier says are increasingly misbehaving by wandering the cabin, defecating or even biting passengers.

Delta's rules for traveling with service and comfort animals starting March 1 require documentation confirming the safety and necessity of the animal 48 hours before departure.

The passenger must provide a veterinary health form or vaccination record for either category of animals. For comfort animals and psychiatric-service animals, the passenger must also provide:

♦A letter signed by a doctor or licensed mental-health professional stating the passenger’s need for the animal.

♦A signed letter stating the animal is trained to behave without a kennel.

Unfortunately, I don't think this will change much. There are mills that put out this type of documentation. Websites you just call up and a person with MH credentials signs a form and mails it away.. Now you can take your dog anywhere.

They limited the types of Esa animals they will allow. No more Llamas, spiders, snakes, ferrets goats, turkeys among others (they specifically noted they've seen many of these) . It's not perfect but it's at least a start (and United and AA love to copy delta)

The article states both service and comfort animals and the comment was about animals in general. My point is there can be very legitimate reasons for them but it would also be easy to show that need I’m sure.

Those are not comfort animals. To my surprise there are no standards regarding comfort animals, literally none. I could own a hound that likes to bite people and call it my comfort dog.

My wife had to bring a cat with her on a plane once as she was moving across the country. It wasn't comforting for either of them.

Quite fucking true, I used to run a wireless store in Boston. Some old, rich aloof woman used to insist on taking her "comfort" animal in. That dog was a terror, when he growled at a kid then shit on the floor it was an immediate "you leave now"
Which was of course followed with "I'll sue" guess what never happened?
