I don't think Trump is "allied" with the Russians, no. I do think that Putin may have more respect for him, though, than Hillary... and I know this isn't a popular opinion, but I don't think American vs Russian Arms competition in the middle east has worked out well for anyone. Maybe it would be positive if we could open communication with the Russians, to perhaps help bring stability in countries like Syria.

The Putin Trump relationship

When you get back, read this: http://www.slate.com/articles/news_...applebaum_on_the_russian_hack_of_the_dnc.html
It's an interview with Anne Applebaum, Pulitzer Prize winning columnist and a pretty good honest writer in general.

Wow. Three things really stood out for me. Two of which I'd heard about before.

This one I had not, and it's a doozy!

Weisberg: There was one other incredibly sinister tidbit from the Republican convention. Trump didn’t care about anything in the platform, but he made a big point about getting the plank removed that said Republicans supported helping Crimea resist the Russian invasion. He got that taken out.

Applebaum: Yeah, I have to tell you, when I saw that, alarm bells went off. When I saw that very specific thing being done, particularly given that the Trump campaign was apparently not that much interested in the rest of the platform, most of which is far more conservative than anything that he stands for. When I saw that they were specifically interested in that, I thought either they’re trying to show someone in Moscow, Look, we really have influence, so you can go on helping us, or there’s someone on his staff who genuinely believes that and wants to push it through.

The other two are Trump beholden to Russian money big time:

Weisberg: They’re also his biggest investors now. American banks don’t lend Trump money anymore because he stiffed them after going bankrupt. His biggest investors are Russian oligarchs allied with Putin.

Applebaum: Yes, this is something I hadn’t fully realized until recently: the degree to which his business seems to survive on Russian money, including some rather dodgy Russian money. There was a description of one of his companies that describes how money would suddenly appear from Kazakh bank accounts to keep it going. And boy do I recognize that. That’s a way in which business is done in the former Soviet Union. This of course is what the Russians like about him: He owes them something, he’s entangled with them, they know stuff about him, they know details about him.

And the sordid past of his campaign manager, Paul Manfort, working hard for a pro-Russian stooge in Ukraine:

His campaign manager is Paul Manafort, who was for many years working in Ukraine on behalf of Viktor Yanukovych, who was the pro-Russian president of Ukraine who escaped Ukraine after the Maidan revolution in 2014. And Manafort knows very well all these tactics. He used them in Ukraine. This is very much Ukrainian-style politics: nasty leaks, Twitter trolls, the use of thugs at meetings, this is all very East European. And of course Manafort himself has deep links to Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs, and therefore via them to the Kremlin. So the idea that they would want Donald Trump as president is not remotely surprising. It’s not even secret. You didn’t need to be conspiratorial-minded to see it. He’s got these connections, he’s got these political views that they like, and he’s surrounded by people they know.

I certainly hope this all gets better looked into and brought to the fore. D:

none of that really matters because at the end of the day there's only 2 valid options: you are either voting for trump, or against a trump presidency via hillary clinton.

Well, in a solidly blue state like mine I may vote for a more progressive candidate than Hillary Clinton. If I were in FL or Ohio, I'd for for her, though.

I used to be a Trump fan. Now I think he's about the biggest asshole on the planet. I read The Art of the Deal and was really impressed. I never once watched even 5 seconds of The Apprentice. But recently I was alerted to the fact that The Art of the Deal is absolute bullshit. The ghostwriter confessed that he put "lipstick on a pig."

Can this be independently verified? If true, this would be HUUUUUUGE. Even HUUUUGER than the conversation with Kasich and the offer of most powerful VP.

Who am I kidding? It does not matter what Teflon Don does or says.

The Washington Post: Trump campaign guts GOP’s anti-Russia stance on Ukraine

New York Magazine: Is Donald Trump Working for Russia?

The LA Times : In a shift, Republican platform doesn't call for arming Ukraine against Russia, spurring outrage

And, a raft of other sites, but not in USA Today or, apparently, on Youtube, so . . . :'(

Washington Post reported it too. (Didn't he ban them from his speeches? :hmm: )

The Trump campaign worked behind the scenes last week to make sure the new Republican platform won’t call for giving weapons to Ukraine to fight Russian and rebel forces, contradicting the view of almost all Republican foreign policy leaders in Washington.

People need to vote for whom they are comfortable with. However it's a good idea to know whom and what you are supporting.

Edit: Perk beat me. Should have read the whole thread.

So why are we worried about the Ukraine again? So many people justified obama sitting on his hands by saying we didn't have a defense treaty with the Ukraine and that it wasn't a democratically elected government and was a coup. Now they are pissed trump pretty much agrees?

Go go Warhawks.

Coup? You don't seem to know the definition of a coup. It was a popular uprising of the people against a collaborationist stooge imposed by Putin AND Trump's campaign manager Manafort!

You're missing the takeaway here, that Trump, who's operatives didn't give a tinker's damn about most any other RNC plank, flew into action over this one stance, anathema to almost all Republicans (and to me and many others, btw), in what screams to anyone bothering to look, "Here Daddy Putin, keep your secret and not so secret funding of my building projects coming!"

Disgusting.

LOCK HIM UP!

Who won the convention ratings race, Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton?

Trump, by a margin of two million viewers, according to Nielsen, the TV ratings firm.
Clinton's Thursday night acceptance speech at the DNC averaged 29.8 million viewers across ten broadcast and cable channels.
Trump's speech at the RNC one week earlier averaged 32.2 million viewers across the same channels.

This really is insane. Media needs to get their balls in gear, as well as the Clinton campaign, and work the on the Putin hiding behind the curtain of the Trump campaign.

Unfathomable that any kind of so-called conservative would allow themselves to dismiss this so easily.

Not surprising. Trump is an entertainment vehicle. I suspect a far greater proportion of haters watching him just for the sake of watching him vs the same crowd watching Hillary.

Think about it: Do you think a show like Jersey Shore became popular because those viewers actually like the people on that show? Do you think people watch the Kardashians because they like them? Of course they don't, and such is the draw of this reality show candidate.

Trump got more viewers for his speech, the Democrats got more viewers for everything else. Pretty simple.

Hah, pretty much matches with what I did exactly except that I didn't watch Trump's speech. I don't actually like watching Hillary's speeches either because she sounds so robotic. I was interested in hearing Biden, Obama, and Bill, though.

The few times I tuned in to the RNC, it was incredibly 'low energy'.
