Would have liked to see Ossoff win but honestly
1) he wasn't that great a candidate (was against medicare for all for starters) and was a total stiff. I'm sure he's a nice enough guy but people who voted for him were probably just really voting against Handel, rather than because they believed in him.
2) the big prize is the 2018 midterms and I'd rather not do anything to jeopardize those odds. Having your enemy falsely thinking he is safe is often a better position to be than having them wounded and cornered. I suppose the key word however is safe. Whilst right wing populism seems to be dying down in Europe, I'm not sure its not on actually still on the rise in the US.

Ossoff really didn't do any better than Clinton did vs Trump this past November. I dont see how the msm reporting that Trumps approval has fallen so much is accurate.

You mean, by taking ~3 million more votes? Yea, she lost bigly in the popular vote.

Because todays polls are all cherry picked bs all around, perpetuating the need to be on the winning team.

Trump is as much a populist as he is Santa Claus. But of course, if Trump would proclaim that he is Santa, 97% of his followers would believe that as well.

Maybe, just maybe the real news story is the utter powerlessness of the liberal media to shape American political opinion anymore - at all.

I deeply disagree with the Democratic view of where the country should go. I'm happy when they lose.

This isn't really the case. The thing you refer to as 'I' is a programmed response, a robotic brainwashed being generated by being exposed as a child to the notion of an absolute truth that if you did not buy into you would go to hell. You were made to conform by being terrorized and were converted. You see the other as evil, a tempters, as agents of the devil, etc.. You represent the good, but not the real good, only the notion of good instilled into you by threat. You can't even define what your good is because it is intangible. It changes from moment to moment depending on whatever external threat appears that threatens the invisible rules of your conformism. This is why some can see you as being team driven. Your team is that group who are in a particular mental prison, those who fear the catastrophe of a victory of the devil, and have been brainwashed further to identify him with liberals. You survive the crippling damage done to you by the pleasure you take from the smugness generated by your imagined virtue. It's the thrill you get standing up to evil. It's your drug.

The sad part is that everything you fear has already happened. The catastrophe you fear will happen if evil wins happened in your childhood. You were turned inside out and upside down. You want terror then know that you and the world have and always will be perfect. Knowing that is what you fear. The war between good and evil exists only in your head. Relax and be happy.

How the hell was that shooting a Democrat victory? One of their own degenerated to your level. That's not a victory, that's a fucking living funeral.

Or a baseball game could be a baseball game and not a euphemism for a shooting.

https://www.nytimes.com/elections/results/georgia-congressional-runoff-ossoff-handel

"Karen Handel, a Republican, defeated Jon Ossoff, a Democrat, in the most expensive U.S. House race in history. The election was largely seen as a referendum on the first months of Donald J. Trump’s presidency. Republicans maintain control of the seat, which was vacated by Tom Price, the new secretary of health and human services."

I'm still not tired of winning, are you Democrats tired of losing? Tired of losing yet again?

https://www.nytimes.com/elections/results/south-carolina-house-special-election

"The race did not receive the same national focus as special elections in Georgia and Montana."

Now i'm looking forward to some of the spin clowns trying to spin this into a win for Democrats.

What does jackassery like this gain us? Is it so difficult to be gracious in victory as we ought to be in defeat?

Yes this is the internet, but for F's sake I don't understand the personal gratification people get from nastiness.

Sadly Taj is mostly right. Zero for four is not a track record to be proud of. That's not to say all is lost it's an opportunity to learn.

I will do something it would never occur to you nor have I ever seen you practice, honesty. It isn't a win for Democrats. Those people continued to vote for policies and practices when asked individually are against. It may not have been as big a referendum on Trump as people were touting since Trump won that area by <2 pts.

I did hear one glimmer of hope this morning. When Obama won in 08 there were 4-6 special elections in 09 and the Dems won them all. It was in 10 when the tide turned.

Why are you so comfortable rooting for a team that utterly abdicates any chance at moral victories? Are morals unimportant to you?

Pretty sure @imported_tajmahal just spends his days jerking off to the thought of an eternal Republican dictatorship. Democracy? Freedom of thought? Screw that, one-party rule forever!

I live in the 6th district, while I don't know anyone who voted for Handel, I also don't know anyone who believed Ossoff had more than a longshot chance. My area is very progressive and went blue, Cobb County went heavily Handel and is a solid mass of rich, white, racist privilege.

Comparing the result to the numbers Trump got is a bit misleading though, when there's a far more apt comparison available, namely the last house election in the district back in November 2016 between Tom Price (R) and Rodney Stooksbury (D), which Price won handily by over 23 pts.

So compared to the last house election (just 7 months prior), Ossoff managed a 20 point swing. If that kind of swing carries over to all the 2018 house elections (which it almost certainly won't, this was undoubtedly a bit of a freak case), then the Republicans will be wiped out in the house (wiped out, as in, they would lose roughly 90% of their current seats).

That's the fun thing about a good gerrymander. It's incredibly powerful to secure a majority for a close minority, but if things get too out of hand, there's a ton of narrow optimal wins that all start falling apart.
