I've been downloading and using Linux Live CDs for the last four days, just because I suddenly feel like giving it a try.

I tried Yamefa and OpenGeu last night. Love the looks of them but I could not figure out by myself (I mean without reading the help files) how to get my DSL connection to work (unlike my other favourite so far, Fedora 9). Gonna try ELive next. Enlightenment is very nice but I like KDE and Gnome too.

So far, I've tried those plus PCLinuxOS (like it), OpenSuse 10.3 & SimplyMepis (both won't even boot, neither did Debian), Slax (like it too) and Xe/Ke/Ultimate Ubuntu (they're ok I suppose, I don't see why so many people love them).

past lifer... Where have you been? Oh, and is this why you suggested me the distros you did? If you like slax, I suppose that bodes well for my zenwalk, as soon as I can repartition anyway.

jhu,

Long time no see. I've been back since October 2006.

BlueAcolyte,

I was banned for five and a half years.

I downloaded and burned Zenwalk but found out it's not a live CD, so I did not try it (I'm not ready for hard disk install yet).

So what is your preference for a window manager? I currently have Xfce, it's a bit too... blurry somehow. I'm trying Enlightenment, like you recommended.

So far I prefer KDE but Gnome is nice too. I found Enlightenment gorgeous but hard to figure out and unintuitive coming from Windows. Gonna try the Sabayon Live DVD now.

Any particular reason for why you aren't liking Ubuntu?

I've tried Fedora 8, PCLinuxOS, VLOS, OpenSuse 10.3 and some others but always end up going back to a *buntu install because it typically detects everything first boot correctly.

Fedora 8 I had a hell of a time trying to get static IP to stick and general configurations seemed boken. I think this was due to the security built into Fedora that seemed cumbersome. Disabling it made it nicer to use but the usability was lacking

OpenSuse 10.3 was nice but sluggish on the kaptops I tried

VLOS I haven't touched since 2006 but I hear they are having deveoper wars so I stayed away. It used to be the easier to use version of Gentoo.

I could never get PCLinuxOS 64-bit to work. It always froze on boot.

With Kubuntu 8.04 my cousin can easily run everything he did on his XP install out of the box. It propted him to install media packages when he needed them. I guess Ubuntu feels more broken in to me because it's what I've been using the past few years.

I was always curious on Sabayon. Please post your impressions when you get around to it.

Could not get Sabayon to boot completely. Somehow it's the first distro that could not see any media, including my DVD player (yet that's where the live DVD was booting from, go figure).

As for Ubuntu, I do not dislike it, just cannot see what the fuss is all about.

That's a shame you couldn't get Sabayon to work. It looks like a pretty nice distro.

I use Ubuntu because I don't have to do as much work with it to make things work.

There is still a lot of polish that needs done but for every day use it's pretty nice.

Wow, what'd you do to get banned for that long? That's like a lifetime ban in terms of the Internet.

Try LinuxMint. I like it a lot. I am not going to Vista, and have almost given up all of my XP. Just have XP on a 40 gig drive for some games. It is based on Ubuntu, but is pretty slick. This is the 5.0-48 Beta/RC2 version.

The compositor is XFCE's version of compiz, you can set shadows and window transparency.
