Meantime, I saw on the news a few days ago that Kaiser Permanente is advising Oakland staff to remain indoors for lunch hours due to concerns for their safety. I did notice in peaking through the curtains of my cubicle in the surgery staging area pre-op that most of the staff were exhibiting facial expressions I can best describe as disturbed.Denny’s shutters only location in Oakland after more than 54 years due to high crime..“However, the safety and well-being of Denny’s team members and value guests is our top priority,” the company said. “Weighing those factors, the decision has been made to close this location.”
Oakland government has been in turmoil for several years now. Many residents have been urging the mayor to declare a state of emergency due to recently exacerbating crime but she has been resisting. It's definitely something about this area. Recent news was that In-N-Out Burger closed its location there, and it's the ONLY one they have closed in their ENTIRE HISTORY! It's kind of a running meme when people ask/wonder if In-N-Out (and also Micro Center) will expand to their locale. I'm far more aware of the legal system than you. The states are sovereign in this country, and California is the wealthiest and most powerful of them all. Their real estate market shooting up, is unique to and is the result of that state's wealth of resources. The municipality is the one with the most direct control over what goes on in their local space.

Crime in areas of CA has gotten out of control because the threat of repercussions has evaporated. Why do cops want to put themselves in harms way knowing whoever they arrest (again in these areas with high crime with such places like Walgreens, In-N-Out burger and this example thread) never see jail time?
