CPA, I also considered the HK 520 but at this price decided to jump on the Denon. The Denon seems to be a bit more powerful, plus comes with 7 amplified channels where the 520 only comes with 5. I believe the 520 can be had for a little cheaper still, maybe $50 bucks, so basically Id listen to them both as it comes down to a personal preference.

GrimmRimmer, I also tried for the free shipping but since Im in Texas as well they wouldnt go for it. Where in Texas are you located? What tyepe of setup are you planning on?

ive heard that harman kardons arent very reliable
i like the style of the hk better than denon though
i think the onkyo/integra lines are a better comparison against the denon though

MiniThug,

I have no clue as to what kind of set-up I will have just yet. The only reason I jumped on this particular AVR so fast is because of all of the rave reviews it has received... not to mention the $300 off of all other authorized retailers prices. Do you have any idea which speakers would go well with this receiver?? I was think of going with the Swan Divas, but they are a little bit out of my price range right now. What's your setup going to be??

BTW -- Thanks for the great deal!!!

Grimm, Im in the same boat that youre in right now. I really have no clue. Im looking at several different lines and I cant make up my mind. I looked at the Swan Divas but they are a little steep for me to justify right now too. Im considering the following, B&W 601 s3, Axiom Audio M22Ti's, and Paradigm Atoms/Titans/Mini Monitors. Thinking of going bookshelves in the fronts and rears with a matched center channel speaker. The only thing I know for sure at this point is that Ill be adding a SVS 25-31 sub. Supposedly those things rock!

OT, but... Be careful with B&W fronts. I have 602s2 & and LCR6 center. I really should have ponied up the extra couple hundred to get 3 LCR-6s. Their voices (602 vs LCR6) just don't match, despite the expectation that they should. With a bit of fiddling, I really don't notice on a day to day basis, but it does show up from time to time. I've got a 3801 amp, and use a self-powered sub (velodyne HGS-15)

If you're thinking about using your setup for movies, you might look elsewhere - maybe M&K, even Klipsch if you can take the ribbing from your audiophile friends. The B&Ws are unbeliveably beautiful on classical, though, if that's your thing.

Well being college students, I dont expect much classical music to be pumped through our speakers by my roomates and I. Thanks for the heads up on B&W. My budget is around $800-$1000 for fronts, rears, center and stands. Anyone else have some suggestions?

How does this compare against the Onkyo TX-DS797 (about $800 when it is
in stock)? Seems like the Denon has 7.1 vs 6.1 (no big deal to me since I
would only use one rear channel speaker) and an extra 10 watts per channel,
but Onkyo has 192 kHz/24 bit DACs vs. Denon's 96 kHz/24 bit DACs and is
THX Select certified. Opinions?

Also, how do you know 6th Avenue is an authorized dealer? I couldn't find
them located on the Denon website. I know Crazy Eddie isn't listed and
has a $718 price.

I have the 3802 with a full set of Axioms and a SVS sub powered by a Samson 700. Couldn't be happier.

Anybody call them and get a price for the 1802? Really starting my hunt for a new receiver and speakers now
Their price on the AVR-1802 should be $325 + shipping. I read this in another forum. I also own the AVR-1802 and pondered the thought of jumping on the AVR-3802 deal. However, I'm only using 5 amplified channels and the AVR-1802 has enough power for my 14' x 21' x 8' listening / viewing area.

Also, as John indicated, the MX-500 is a great remote to replace the remotes that come with the Denon receivers. The remote that came with my Denon AVR-1802 is actually a cheap piece of junk - even the Cinema 7 One 4 All remote is constructed better than the Denon remote.

There are additional "hot" deals on the AVR-3802 which could vary depending on the region you are from. For example, if you have a Tweeter store in your area. Tweeter currently offers 18 months of "interest free" payments when you make a purchase greater than $800. I visited my local store yesterday expressing my interest in the 3802. I then inquired about their "price matching" policy and indicated that I could get the same receiver for $699 from an authorized Internet dealer. The salesperson talked with the manager for a few minutes and then indicated that they would come down to $850 on the receiver and offer me the interest free financing. I decided to hold off on the offer at the time. If someone is going to purchase the receiver for $699 and throw it on their credit card @ 18% interest, then the Tweeter deal that you work out with your local store might be a more attractive option and end up costing you less in the long run.

this is along the speakers to match teh denon topic --

i was looking at the boston acoustics vr965, vr920, and vx surround (dont remember the number) these speakers not only sound spectacular but also look really cool. in addition, they supposedly are one of the better macthining speaker sets to the denon receivers (in terms of power distribution and range)

leonc re your question on the 797. Here is the difference as I have had Denon, Sony DB and ES and now I use the 797. You must think of your speakers. Energy will sound a liitle high / harsh on the Onkyo while they will sound more in range with the Denon. Polk Audio or Infinity are more midrange specific and benefit from the Highs of the Onkyo.

Also the 797 has passive heatsinks while the Dennon 3802 has a temperature controlled fan. Personally when I listen to music all I wana hear is my music not a damn fan. That is what the computer is for.

I got a great deal from them on my 1802 and a subwoofer and I love them both. I also got a kenwood in dash mp3 player from them. Service couldn't be better. Great people. I added them to reseller ratings a while back, couldn't believe they wern't there at the time.

My dad asked that I help him find a receiver for him (he's using a 20 y/o receiver that he's tweaked and upgraded over the years) and his rear speakers are wasted unless he's watching a dvd. I bought the 1802 several months ago (matched with the JBL nsp-1 and sony sawm40... my first setup, small watching area) and am incredibly happy with it. The remote bites, but, hell, I hardly ever use it anyway (just switching between inputs and volume adjustments is all).

Anyway, it's hard to pick out a receiver for someone else... especially someone that won't make up their mind about whether they're going to keep their existing speakers or buy different ones later. But I can't imagine finding a better deal anywhere, so he's getting this 3802. What a great deal. Man, I paid $499 to Crutchfield for my 1802 about 6 months ago. I'm gonna be green with envy while helping him set it up.

Well, I think it's going to be the Denon 3802, instead of the HK 520. Damn and to think I had started my receiver search by seriously looking at at a $310 Yamaha 5550. How the heck do I end up pushing my budget up to $700. Damn you Hot Deals!

Hmmmm, $325 for 1802 plus shipping? So tempting. I'm gonna ask over at the HTF to see if anybody's selling an 1802 first, and then I'll cave in and call 6ave.

Guys, at this price point, you could also consider the Sony DA5ES. I picked up mine from Oade Bros for $780 shipped. This is a monster receiver (weighs ~ 45lbs) and is Sony's flagship right now. Retail was $1500 when it was released around 6 months ago. It offers pretty much everything the 3802 has with higher sampling DACs (192 khz vs. 96 khz), multiple sound processors, and bass management that has no equal anywhere near this price point. You can set individual EQ for each speaker and bass crossover can be set from 40Hz to 200Hz in 10Hz increments. I use mine as a pre/pro.

Not saying the 3802 isn't a smoking deal, it is. But if you're looking for similar options, especially if you have external amp(s), the DA5ES should be considered.

specs for DA5ES

edit - Forgot to make a big distinction between the 3802 and DA5ES.; the Denon has 7 amplified channels, the Sony has 6.

I found a local authorized dealer to pricematch it to $725 total.
Only caveat is that it is an open box (not display model) - has everything: remote, manuals, original box, warranty, etc.
Should I take it?
-- Oh yeah ... and I can get 0% financing for 6 months.

I demo-ed the receiver and it sounds absolutely incredibe -- DTS demo of Gladiator w/ 7.1 B&W speaker set-up.

Id say go for it if comes with the warranty still. I suppose that it should. As I understand it 6ave supplies are limited and may be running low.

I think someone asked...

I have the Denon 3801, and Boston Accoustics 965's (I think...the one's with the 8" 80 watt drivers) and they work really well together. The drivers in the mains have enough "oomph" (for me at least), so I don't think a sub is really needed. But the BA speakers are a great set, and work well with the Denon.

Thanks for the deal!

I called yesterday at work and Chris the CS guy confirmed that the deal shouldn't be going anywhere anytime soon........worst that'll happen is the price gets better when they introduce the next line later this year/early next year.
