That is a very good price.

One option: Best Buy has the x1000 on sale for $399 (starting yesterday). It's only 5.1 but is has a higher level of Audyssey room correction (MultEQ XT), an extra year of warranty, and one or two extra additional miscellanous features.

I purchased this receiver from Frys for $299 as part of a 4th of July deal. Great receiver, I get a lot of use out of the airplay feature. The best part is being able to turn on the receiver from anywhere in the house and controlling the receiver volume with my iphone volume buttons.

They also have the Onkyo TX-NR-616 for $350

I heard about reliability issues, so am wondering which one to get? The Onkyo seems to me more feature rich, but the Denon seems to me unanimously the better built device.

Any advice?

Also, which speakers to get? Frys have got a speaker sale Klipsch b-20 for $120. Are they good speakers, and is that a good price?

I would steer clear of Onkyo just from online research, but I'm sure the odds would be with you either way.

I probably would have still grabbed the Fry's Denon deal if the "free shipping" had panned out. No local stores here, unfortunately.

Uhh ok whatever you say..

Let's also not forget that it's really 6. Nobody wants a device perma-plugged into the front.

I mean if you have more than 6 inputs doesn't that mean you need to re-evaluate your life?

I've looked closely at Onkyos. I get the impression that the heat/HDMI board failure issues mostly deal with older models. But I've still went with Denon last week when I bought a clearance 1713 for $200 (a killer price). One reason is that I'm familiar with Denon AVRs since I already had a 2112ci. Additionally, I personally need a number of years of "no systemic problems" before jumping back on a brand. Otherwise, Onkyo seems to provide Denon with a good challenge from a price/features perspective.

But this e400 is still awesome.

Not sure if sarcasm.. hoping so.

My home happens to include a family, gasp! People of different age groups have different interests.

The new game consoles that are forthcoming aren't backward compatible, which isn't helping. But with DVRs, streaming media devices, game consoles, universal disk players, it's not difficult to use 6+ HDMI ports.

Not sure how having a family requires you to need more ports. Did you buy a DVD player for each kid? How do you use them all at once? I agree with the others, you are in the almost non-existent minority if you need more than 3 or 4 HDMI ports. Odds are if you do, you are connecting redundant devices just so you can say you need that many.

Some food for thought, from experience having had a Denon blow and replacing it with Onkyo. The Denon sounded so much better in the exact same setup.

Denon simply makes better receivers top-to-bottom. Sometimes they have questionable reliability, but they are serviceable, and always sound better than just about anything in its class.
