@Torn Mind, I hope you find a dentist who's sympathetic, understanding and highly capable and not predatory. I firmly believe they exist, but perhaps your assessment that they are rare is accurate. Keep looking and settle for nothing less! Good luck with your dietary adjustments and dental hygiene regimen.

My first dental appt in almost 2 years is set for a month out with a guy I've not yet met, fingers crossed. IIRC, the Nextdoor stuff on him was basically uniformly glowing, over the top. He was born in my town (I was not but been here close to 50 years). I saw a picture of him, he's older but not old, looks genuine and familiar. I have the feeling I'll like him. Hope he's really capable and beyond being shady. ATM, I'm not in pain and unaware of any issues I didn't already have, basically areas in my mouth that deserve special dental hygiene attention on a regular basis by me. We'll see what the doctor says after the full set of xrays they'll be taking.

I have no dental insurance. My HMO has a rider I can sign up for for a monthly extra fee that includes dental, but I'd have to go to a dentist who has a deal with them. I don't know of any, personally. My sister, who did go to my former dentist on my recommendation, eventually switched to the HMO plan, not because she didn't like my dentist but, she said, because it was cheaper. I'm a very frugal guy usually, but figure my health is worth paying a premium to maintain. I mean, what else is really? Mostly my dental expenses are modest, compared to other people my age, I figure. I had one root canal, had my wisdom teeth extracted ~1995 (on my dentist's recommendation, not because they had issues but because as you age they become more difficult to keep clean and are apt to become a problem eventually). I recall just one other large expense when my dentist sent me to an oral surgeon because of a tooth resorption issue a few years ago. Other than that, just cleaning, inspection, xrays and the occasional issue with former fillings and crowns that needed repair, etc. I can't remember the last time I needed a new filling.

Those HMO type dental plans are really substandard. They basically offer to pay the dentists such cut rates that only bad ones accept them....typically the major volume offices with terrible dentists. I had one drill on me 14 years ago...some quack out of NYU. He did so much damage filling two cavities with 2 repeat visits to fix the bad work....eventually my present dentist just opted to go with crowns on those molars 5 year ago. Your last dentist was right.

Look into dental insurance companies that offer individual plans for DPPO like Metlife or Delta Dental. It's going to vary based on where you live...but may be worth it if you think you have dental work to be done beyond cleanings.

I'd like to hear more about the dental issues that can be resolved at home. I have a mirror, several drills, bondo, and a fair tolerance for pain.
You might need some lidocaine.

There's lots of things you can do at home, but fixing dental problems isn't one of them other than rigging some kind of primitive tooth extraction device AFAIK. Dental hygiene is preventative medicine, not curative. It really is super helpful, though. Different people have MUCH DIFFERENT RISK PROFILES. I believe that's considerably genetic, but lifestyle, what you eat, and your DH is huge as well. My dentist was well into his 60's, maybe more, when he retired. He told me he'd never so much as had a single cavity. I believe he told me his mother was the same way. He attributed it to good genes, more than anything.

WTF!
I don't want to know how you came across that stuff, but if your sex life requires the use of anesthetic it may be time to reevaluate you're preferences. Just sayin.

Actually, my first encounter lidocaine was what they used for my wisdom teeth extraction.

I just googled "lidocaine spray mouth" and that was one of the results. There are other more mundane results.

I didn't quite know that it was also used over the counter to numb women's throats. Sometimes the name, descriptor, or appearance can make all the difference in judging something.

Yeah really! What happened @Muse ?
New dentist has quite the operation. Went well. He made some effort to introduce himself. He's older, hope he doesn't retire soon. Told me his son has become a dentist and is apt to join his practice but for the time being has been serving at various other offices in order to get a perspective on how it is elsewhere. I figure there's a good chance his son will be my dentist eventually!

They x-rayed me. He measured my gum recession all over while a helper took notes, recording what he was saying, e.g. "4mm, 5mm, 4mm, 6mm, 3mm, etc." He scheduled me for a filling and a couple deep cleanings, right then left, and I've had all that done. I should be in there in a few weeks for another appt. They gave me a waterpik, had choice of _regular_ and a travel, I took the _regular_.

Many people work there. There are about 3 women at the reception desks. Like my last dentist, seems like his entire staff are female. The woman who did my deep cleanings is his associate, a dentist.

All this isn't cheap, but I figure money spent on health is well spent.

I forgot the rest. That first day (Oct. 29, 2021), the new dentist, looking at my x-rays, looked at the problem I'd had with tooth #11 (left upper canine). I'd had a tooth resorption issue with it 6 years ago, for which I had a procedure done by an oral surgeon recommended by my former dentist. A filling was done, but there was a fair chance that the resorption would reoccur. They are not well understood. It's kind of like a cavity but it's not caused by external bacteria, it's your own body absorbing the tooth's calcium.

Well, it has resumed and my new dentist recommended I see an endodontist. It was the same guy that my former dentist sent me to in 2007 to have a root canal done. So, I go back to this endodontist's office, he takes panoramic x-ray and is pretty confident he can fix it so it doesn't recur. He says his 5-year follow-ups are pretty consistently favorable. I have a root canal on tooth #11 done by him followed by oral surgery a few weeks later. I will see that endodontist again in December so he can evaluate. I paid a lot of money for dental in the last 8 months!
