AVG if you want a free anti-virus program.
If he's referring to AOL Kaspersky, it's better than AVG, and is a well-behaved program. I installed it in place of the full $50 version of Kaspersky to test it, other than the security toolbar, and uninstalled it again with no repercussions.
Hyperlite, maybe you have an infection.
1) Try installing a 30-day trial version of the full-on KAV6 (
link to it). This version adds rootkit detection since it features the Proactive Defense module too.
2) Download my maxed-out configuration file from here:
http://www.mechbgon.com/maxed-out.cfg .
3) After installing & updating KAV6, reboot if required, then right-click the red
K, choose
Settings, and click the
Load button in the
Protection panel. Load the settings from
maxed-out.cfg and then close the settings panel and run a full Scan My Computer.
