I was running D3 today at 12x10 res, all video settings on high, AF on high, AA on 16x. My fps was a glass shattering 1. Doom 3 is a game for the future.

That's because anti-aliasing is incredibly computationally expensive. Think of every edge pixel for a region needing a calculation to adjust its color values based on pixels next to it or near it, for every frame.

The thing I don't understand is why it's such a big deal. I have a UXGA screen, and I usually just turn the damn thing completely off. It's my opinion that AA was a feature designed to make things look straight instead of choppy on crappy old low-res monitors! I find that for games that run well at UXGA, they often look sharper with AA off. But hey, that's just me-- my first post-install step on Windows is usually to turn off ClearType, because anti-aliased type makes things harder to read on a computer screen at smaller sizes.

EDIT: By the way, the impact of AA for every multiplier is most likely close to exponential.

Jvarszegi, I know, I was just having fun. Right now I'm running 12x10, everything on High, AF on high, AA down to 4x, runs smoothly and looks great. But the game is so dark I can never figure out where to go lol

dotn sweat it man, no one can run d3 at 1600x1200 ultra quality with aa on smoothly, no matter how much they tell you they can. SLI will change that though.

Doom 3 will run perfect with the following

3 GHz or over P4 or 3000+ or Higher Newcastle
Over 768 MB of RAM
Video card with 512 MB on board, 32 Pixel Pipeline

The documentation for Doom3 says ultra quality is for 512 MB cards.

No matter how often this is repeated, people seem to prefer to blame drivers and whatnot, but none of this changes the fact that if you run ultra quality on a 256 card then you have constant texture trashing (swapping in and out over the AGP bus). It's surprising it even runs at 12 FPS.

End of story

I played through a good few levels of the game on the ultra setting with my 6800gt, it wasn't that bad. It would lag a bit when you open doors to new areas and what not, but other than that it ran fine.

With some tweaks in the config file, my arperature size set to 512 I am able to play doom 3 at ultra settings on my 6800 gt (430, 1170) at 75 fps (on the timedemo)

Drivers and config file tweaks will help out a lot. Overclock your GT to Ultra speeds if you can. Turn down AA or turn it off; keep AF at 8 or 16x.

And your FX55 should overclock a bit as well. Try that.

What about those 1200 dollar 3DFX Wildcat cards? I think they had like 640mb...

I eventually went with an EVGA card, but I read that people have OCed it pretty well, at least to 400/1100, which is what I'm going for (but thanks for remembering my question )

On a side note - the 6800GT is HUGE. It totally cuts off the airflow in my case. I'll have to figure that out.

I got the EVGA GT and run it @420/1120 stable w/ the nv/5 silencer. I have a 120mm intake fan blowing right on this card stays very cool.

Not optimized for games....

still, I'd be curious what it would pull...probably less than a 6800gt though.

Its the Tsunami case intake fan 120mm SilenX @14dba cant hear it and pushes bout 50CFM. My cards nv5 silencer fan sits right in front of this.

How about your motherboard's chipset drivers? You didn't list it, so I don't know what you need.

Oh right. I'm using the A8V1008 drivers (latest non-beta from Asus.)
I didn't see many of the cache options mentioned here. Is that what you're asking?

I'll try to OC it when I put the silencer on, but I do have to do something about airflow. Since this machine is nowhere as 'silent' as I wanted it to be, I think I'm just going to have to put more fans in it and suffer the noise if I want performance.

Just curious, I have 2 Gigs of RAM, can I cheat any of that over to video RAM? ie, make the card use an additional 256 of that, or does the RAM have to be physically on the card?

Do you know the difference btw chipset drivers and a bios revision? Amazing.

Anyways, have u installed the via 4in1 "hyperion" drivers, they will make a large difference if you havent.

Link to latest Via 4in1 drivers, "Chipset Drivers"

You can set your agp aperture size to 256 so when your gfx card is full then it will run over to system memory, but there is much debate as to whether setting aperture sizes to 128 or 256 makes a difference especially on your 256MB gfx card. I have tried all the aperture settings and benched and I can see NO performance increases or decreases

I think he's asking if you loaded the AGP drivers from the Asus CD. I assume you did because you loaded the Marvel Lan driver to get your connection working right? It's on that menu of drivers to load, I'll have to get the exact wording of it, I'm at work right now. I think they're called Mini Port drivers.

In case you guys didnt know, Id saying doom 3 uses 500MB of texture memory is 100% BS and nothing more then marketing.

Download a program that tests how much vram your using. I open up doom 3 with it set at 1024X768 ultra with my agp aperture set to 32MB. It runs 50+ fps. Now i set it to 512MB agp aperture, and run the game on ultra. Guess what, uses NO MORE RAM THEN BEFORE, and the same fps. This means the game DOES NOT even fill up my video card's 128MB of vram, let alone the 500+ it has to use as agp texture memory.

Dont believe everything a game company tells you about the game. They recomend my 9800 pro run at medium settings, yet when i run at ultra at 1024X768 with 16X af, it still runs at over 50FPS 90% of the time.
