So, it looks like I'll be moving to Texas in the next couple of months here. Anyone that has lived there, what are good places to rent/places to avoid. (it will be just me).

I don't think you want to live in Irving.

Maybe North Dallas, Richardson, Plano - even over in Forth Worth. But I think Irving is an armpit.

edit: Sorry - I was thinking about Arlington. I don't know much about Irving.

Describe Irving Texas to me.

Its a city in northeast Texas, lots of roads, buildings.

It gets hot there during the summer, very hot.

Between June and September, limit your outdoor physical activities until late in the evening. Or else you will learn what "Heat Stroke" is all about.

If you wanted to give the USA an enema, Texas is where you'd stick the hose.

Where I would be looking to live is fairly north of Irving, right next to Carrollton. I'm hoping the area isn't a poo hole. (if so, I'll migrate further north to Plano or east to Richardson)

I'm actually working at a client's place in carrollton right now. This area around me is pretty barren.

I have a friend in Irving pretty close to the Fry's on 635/Olympus.

From what I can tell, Irving is starting to develop but still has some ways to go. It's not a terrible place though.

How far are you willing to commute? H-E-B area is pretty nice, that is Hurst, Bedford and Euless. That's in NE Tarrent county.

BTW, I used to commute from Hurst to Irving daily and It's about 20 minutes in good traffic.

20 mins tops. The place I'm looking at is like 2-3 minutes from work (I think, they have so many offices and I don't have an exact address yet. All I know is that it is in Irving texas.. Though the job listing said Las Colinas Texas.

I notice you never miss an oppurtunity to bash Texas in any thread remotely related to the state. Makes me wonder if you've ever spent any time here? Raped by a state trooper in a 10gal hat? Tell us your horror stories

I live in the Coppell/Valley Ranch area which is right next to Irving and it is nice and quiet if that is what you are looking for. I live off Beltline Rd which is a straight shot to Addison which has a good amount of restaurants and bars. I used to live in Plano which is a nice area but if you are going to work in Irving the toll charges can really add up commuting. Los Colinas is also not a bad area to look.

Well... by your definition, the pen1s or vag1na is also located in TX, making it the most important part of America.

btw, TX is the 2nd largest GDP and has the most transparent govt.

I actually really like the idea of nice and quiet. I'm somewhat boring that way. The place I'm looking at is about at the intersection of N Macarthur Blvd and E Beltline Road.

Los Colinas is a built up corridor along hwy 114 on the border or Irving lined with highrise office buildings and is home to several national corporate headquarters including Exxon, Citigroup, and others. Nice area with close proximity to lots of areas of interest and home of the Byron Nelson golf tourney. Housing in the immediate area is limited to highend homes and lots of condos and apartments, but within the 20min commute range you should be able to find about anything you might want.

You will find no shortage of things to see and do in the DFW area, and there are several AT'ers who can answer your questions, just ask us.
August kind of sucks here because of the heat, but the rest of the year the weather is pretty much perfect. Welcome and good luck:thumbsup:

What are the "Must see" places in Dallas? Museums, exhibits, amusement parks, etc?

I agree with guitardaddy, the Las Colinas area is nice. Upper middle class, maybe upper class in some cases. Fairly modern, maybe not a lot of good 'local' places around, but lots of chains and such. Not much character I guess, but you can find places to eat, hangout.

Must see places? Symphony hall in Dallas. http://www.dallasculture.org/meyersonSymphonyCenter/

The Dallas and Ft. Worth Museums are all good, I personally like the Dallas arboritum http://www.dallasarboretum.org/ if you like outdoorsy stuff.
Amusement park row is in Arlington on I30 dead center between Dallas and Fort Worth and about 15 minutes from Los Colinas. Within a few square miles there you have Six flags over Texas, Hurrican Harbor (water park), Ballpark in Arlington (Home of the Texas Rangers) and the new billion dollar Cowboy stadium. And just a few minutes to the south and east from there you have Lone Star Park (class A horse track) and the Verizon center (major concert venue)

You will want to check out the West end cultural district on the west side of downtown Dallas, this is also where Dealey plaza and the JFK memorial museum is located, also close by is the American Airline Center home of the Dallas Mavs, and Reunion tower. Other Dallas landmarks North Dallas and the Galleria mall, bachman lake, the Cotton bowl and fairgrounds for the state fair of Texas.

That's just a small sampling, you will quickly find out you can easily spend every weekend for a couple of years exploring this area and still not cover everything. And reasturants don't even get me start on those. Just highlighting my favorite non-chain one of kind places would take me pages

On the Fort Worth side of the metroplex check out the historic Stockyards area, the sundance square area of downtown FW, the Bass performance hall, Texas Motor speedway (if you like NASCAR). If your an outdoorsman you will want to check out the Bass Proshops superstore right off of 114 in grapvine, and or Cabela's in north Fort Worth

Any apartment recommendations in Hurst? (Or places to avoid).

Sorry, I can't help you there, I haven't lived in apartment in over 20 years, always rented houses. Never cared for apartment living and avoided them like the plague. Seems like when I did, I always got noisy or nosy neighbors.
