You will experience what America would be like if I were king.

And find out why Texas and especially north Texas grew faster than any area in the country between the 2000 and 2010 census. When I was a youngster in this area Dallas and Ft. Worth combined had less than a million people, as of the 2010 census the metroplex and suburbs surpassed 7 million

I've worked in the area for a bit. For 8 months, probably ok. I doubt I would choose to move there for longer though. And good god it gets hot and humid there, make sure your a/c is up to par!

Don't forget all you computer geeks. It all started right here in North Texas at TI. The 1st integrated circuit was invented here by Jack Kilby.

The DFW metroplex is huge. There's lots of things to do here.
It seems the people that talk crap about Texas are the people that haven't been to Texas. They slam it because their are jealous of the continued success the area has or they solely dislike it because of political beliefs.

I used to know someone who lived in the gated golf course community of Hackbery Creek in Irving, Texas. It has tennis courts, etc, and four mile sidewalk ring outside the stone walls that was good for walking or jogging. It is also surprisingly affordable.

The only drawback was that the security guards arent very friendly and Ive heard the HOA is one of the most anal in Texas. But you can walk around the neighborhood day or night and feel secure.

Um, if you live in a gated golf course community where you'll probably pay $75K in annual dues for golf alone, you can bet the HOA is anal.

My company wanted me to move to Plano. I simply quit. Better opportunity for me here in CA based on my skillsets.

Do you know what group you'll be working for in HP? I might be able to help you with exact location if it is one I'm familiar with.

Prepare to be very hot. It is a pervasive heat that just beats you down while you are outside. If you aren't from somewhere hot it might be a shock.

I'll be with the firmware functional testing team. Specifically working on Superdome 2 testing.

:hmm: That could mean so many things. Would you be a cruel dictator or a kind hearted monarch?

I have debated this quite for a while. On one hand, I would love to make America like Texas, but that would require a good bit of freedom and openness. I know it is much more difficult to transform a republic into a principality than the other way around. As Machiavelli said, people will remember their old freedoms. Unfortunately, it would take a generation to rewrite the history books and let the generation that knew of freedom die off, thus exceeding my own lifespan. Not to mention, I would have to walk a fine line with keeping my people as ignorant as possible so they would not revolt, but still be able to compete in R&D fields (avoid a North Korea situation). Odds are, my children will be spoiled brats like so many other children of dictators and would do things that would cause people to hate them, like taking their property or their women. So, the country would not go to them. Maybe just become a temporary dictator like Sulla, push through some reforms and then resign once the republic is saved.

But, I am too busy at work to organize all that, so it looks like I will be just another cubicle dweller.

Maybe North Dallas, Richardson, Plano - even over in Forth Worth. But I think Irving is an armpit.
Plano is where a lot of the rich Asian folk live - supposedly has the best school district.
Irving is okay - at least you have a Fry's

I'm at Farmers Branch myself (close to Alpha and Preston). < 5 min drive to work at Maxim if there's no traffic

Do not live in Irving, Hurst, Fort Worth, Carrolton, etc. In the DFW metroplex, stay in Dallas proper. At the very minimum, stay inside the 635 loop.

I have a condo in north central Dallas, right off of I-75 and by North Park Mall, and it takes 15 to 20 minutes to get to Las Colinas. Highway on the way there, NW Highway on the way back. Easy.

Its another pointless part of Texas, surrounded by roads and traffic and swamps. Its hot as balls in the summer and cold as balls in the winter. You will be closer to Oklahoma then anyone should and closer to Louisiana than any one could stand to bear.

Buy a pistol, it will help you most in your hour of need.

During peak commute times that seems unlikely. I drive 75 to 635 Richardson to Irving nearly daily and 15-20 minutes of that drive alone is 635, plus he mentioned wanting nice and quiet and inside the loop seems more about hip and trendy than quiet. Which is good if that's what you want but if it isn't what you want it definitely isn't worth the commute hassle.

edit: Sorry - I was thinking about Arlington. I don't know much about Irving.

I've spent lots of time in Arlington, plenty of nice neighborhoods there. If it were all the same, though, I'd probably live in North Dallas if I were moving to the area.

So, it looks like I'll be moving to Texas in the next couple of months here. Anyone that has lived there, what are good places to rent/places to avoid. (it will be just me).

Places to avoid...Irving, TX

I can't help you on places to live or anything else, as I've only visited. I will say that Irving, TX, looks just like Lombard, IL. The only difference is the weather. In short, it's just another boring suburb that is just like all the rest.

My advice? Live in Dallas and commute into Irving if you must be there.

I'd much rather live off 75 in North Dallas than most other parts of Dallas. Best access to shopping, night life, etc.

You could not pay me enough to commute 635 every day, god that freeway sucks and will probably get worse once they start construction on the toll road add on. Cogman I live right by N Macarthur Blvd and E Beltline Road so if you have any questions about the area feel free to PM me.
