I sent in the rebate on JUNE 19, 2000 (the postmark date from the envelope i sent in).
The mail I received today included one page letter explaining why I didn't get the rebate and all the material I sent in previously.

This is going to be fun. I suspect their system's screwed up. Didn't something similar happen with this fulfillment house before?
Just to verify, you sent in the original UPC codes, right?

Yup, it is ORIGINAL UPC, which cut from the boxes.
For the printer UPC, I just cut the UPC code (the bar and UPC#), not the whole piece that has serial # etc.

I don't have the printer box anymore (SOLD it!), but I thought they asked for the UPC from the side of the box. Maybe that wasn't asked for, but I remember there being 4 identical UPC's on the bottom of the box. I figured this couldn't be the one they wanted, so I sent them the unique one.

so, WTF does this mean?

Send us:

- a copy of your BUY.com reciept showing E-Stamp and HP DeskJet on the same receipt

- original UPC barcode from the E-Stamp Internet postage box

- original UPC barcode from the side of the HP DeskJet printer box

Reject -- wrong UPC-- then that is your problem! I'm pretty certain that for the HP printer you are supposed to send in the large UPC code that has the serial number and other bits on it....

I am still waiting on mine, but I did a rebate on a HP computer ($50) at the same time to the SAME REBATE CENTER and they accepted the large UPC code (with UPC) just fine.

If you sent in the UPC without the serial #, I think you sent the wrong one in. The one I sent in was rather large and computer-printed...

For the printer I sent in the whole UPC symbol which included the serial #, model #...

Wjones:
Since you didn't include the UPC for the model # and such that is probably what they mean when they say you didn't include all the UPC symbols. There are a total of 4 bar codes on the once sticker on the side of the printer.

I've done dozens of rebates and this is the second time I got rejected. The first time is the stupid Staples. I received a white postcard from Staples then I called and received the rebate after 4 weeks, their mistake.

Second time, also the biggest rebate ever, WISH I can claim back.

goog40 & hkchan -

I mailed the rebate form in on 06/18/00.

wjones -

My letter also came from Mary Summers, dated 07/12/00. I contacted e-Stamp about this, and they gave me a toll free phone number to call at Gage Marketing Services. The number is 888/580-9819. Unfortunately, they were closed by the time I called them. According to e-Stamp, Gage closes at 4:30pm CST. I'll be calling them tomorrow to be sure.

RGN -

The printer UPC I sent in was the one from the side of the box. It was, however, only the UPC code and not the other, non-UPC bar codes.

hkchan -

Thanks for pointing out my omission. The numbers that you've listed are indeed the numbers that appear on the UPCs that I submitted for the rebate. And yes, I sent in the original UPC symbols. They were taped immediately to the left of my name and address on the rebate form. I'm not sure how they could have missed the UPC symbols yet managed to address an envelope to return the stuff I sent them. <shrug>

mrVW -

Since they asked for the UPC code and not the printer's serial number, I mailed them the UPC code. If they wanted the serial number bar code, then they should have asked for that. Glad to hear that you got the rebate on your computer, nonetheless.

Thanks for your feedback, all. FWIW, it's good to know that I'm not the only one in this boat. Misery loves company, right? <grin>

I think what chanfo pointed out MIGHT BE RIGHT.
Yes, we all know the rebate form only requests for UPC code but what can we do when the Gage Marketing Service employee (maybe just one of them) is such an idoit, thought that UPC code means the whole piece includes serial number, etc.

I saw the envelope i sent has 2 red ink codes on bottom-left of the envelope, 27 and 28. Maybe Mary Summers just refers to the code on the envelope and then reject the rebate.

I tried to call just now and the office is closed. I'll try again with both 1-800 and non-toll free tomorrow.

I guess if you guys still have the "rest" of the UPC sticker for the printer, you can still send the whole package in again and get the rebate. Does the letter say one way or the other?

I had the same 27/28 on my envelope, too. Not sure what it means, however.

One thing which might or might not be of interest - I've applied for other HP printer rebates before, and have never needed to provide anything other than the printer UPC code. And yes, I have received these other rebates.

No, the letter is extremely vague about what is missing. All it says is that there either weren't enough UPC symbols sent in, or that one or more of the symbols sent in was wrong. I've asked both e-Stamp and Gage via e-mail for clarification on their rejection letter.

Unfortunately, I no longer have the box the printer came in, so I can't easily retrieve the remaining bar coded items from the box.

Believe me when I say I'm going to fight this one... Particularly since I followed their terms and conditions to the letter! Tomorrow should make for a few interesting phone calls. I'll let you all know what the outcome is.

wlj,
Even though I sent in the whole sticker, I'll have to agree with you on that one (that all they asked was the UPC, not the serial number part). I bet it's just a mix-up. Someone scanned in the UPCs to let them know what's required. They scanned the whole printer UPC sticker. The clerk saw that yours did not match and rejected the rebate. But didn't Gage have a rebate fiasco before?

Hey everyone,

This thread is getting ridiculously long, so I am starting a new one here to keep everyone updated about the whole UPC code issue:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=200578

I haven't heard back yet, but was also confused about what UPC codes to send in. As I recall, there were actually TWO barcode things on the E-Stamp software box (v1.1), like on the printer box. One was the actual UPC code, and the other thing had other information on it. To play it safe, I sent in ALL FOUR bar codes, and from the one on the side of the printer box, I sent in the entire thing (including serial number, etc.). I mailed in my rebate around 6/23 and am keeping my fingers crossed. I'll keep you guys informed as to what happens.
