Pretty simple guys/girls, what do you use your computer for ?? It will be interesting if you could also state what CPU you are using if not on your signature.

If I’m not asking too much, could you also state if you are Multi-Tasking (transcoding +Gaming etc).

Thank you all for participating.

Main desktop (i5/3570k): All of the above + workstation. I work from home, so this box is going 12-16 hours a day.
2nd desktop (i5/750): Internet browsing/movies office apps...it runs at the same time as my main box.

No heavy multitasking on either PC for the vast amount of time they are running.

Laptop. i5/2410M. Office apps only. Work machine only.

3rd desktop: i3/2120. Internet browsing.office apps. Occasional movie server. Runs maybe 10 hours a week.

I use my systems for far too many things to list. I use both laptops and desktops.

My only regular use laptop is a T2390 (1.87ghz pentium dual core, core 2 duo with less L2 and lower FSB) with 3gb ram and an 80gb hdd, I only use that regularly for chatting and light browsing.

I do the rest on my desktops, main is a 6 core thuban 16gb ram hd8650 with ssd and hdd, and everything from that all the way down to a 386DX 40mhz, like 16 systems in total.

My main desktop is officially my business computer, but I also use it to rip DVD's for my HTPC (better processor/software, ) but it spends most of it's life as a browser.

I have a backup laptop for my business computer, but it sets idle most of the time. I start it up every week to update it, but I can't tell you the last time I actually used it. I used to travel with it always, but I haven't since I got my iPhone.

Oddly enough, the old desktop Pentium D is upstairs still soldiering away as a legacy gamer and audio transcoding machine... and I use it to browse when the wife is on the main desktop.

My desktop has an Intel i5-2500K @ 4.2GHZ, and I usually just use it for browsing, music and movies and gaming but quite a bit of gaming. My laptop has an Intel i7-3630QM CPU, which I also play a few games on.

I multi-task. The only time I do not multi-task is when I am running a backup program like acronis to create a system image. Then I shut off all my apps.

Asus Transformer: casual web browsing but it's feeling slower every day.

I don't use Office Apps but what I do use is on the list, so there is no choice that fits.

(transcoding +Gaming etc).
Nobody does this. NOBODY.

edit:

I voted "All the above + video transcoding" with CPU in sig. Not a load of transcoding but enough that the 2500k makes a difference from my old X2 4200+. But I'd never game and transcode. How would that even work? Transcoding will muller all your cores (depending on the program used) and gaming will muller all your cores (depending on the game. I'm looking at you here Crysis 3)

um.....yes I do.

I have a small (to me, 8gb) microSD in my blackberry 9350, and I like to watch videos while out waiting (doctor's office is a biggie) so I tend to transcode a few videos to fit best into the blackberry and while I wait I play games on my pc. This is one of the primary reasons I actually got a 6 core and overclocked it. I am also usually running a VM during this, though it is almost always mostly idle (browser in it running flash is usually it's biggest cpu user).

I'm an "all of the above" guy from the list above. I play lots of games (I'm excited for Bioshock Infinite), I do lots of transcoding, I do a lot of photo-editing, Linux and Android development, and a whole lot of virtualization and sometimes some CAD work. I'm often running one virtualization session and sometimes two.

And, I do in fact game while transcoding... but not the latest games. I can run Minecraft while transcoding. I still like to play older games like Nethack and Alpha Centauri and they are fine while transcoding. I will agree that Crysis 3 while transcoding isn't going to work well - although I accidently was doing exactly this the other day, and Crysis 3 does actually play... it's just sluggish. And I frequently have a VM running while gaming. I agree with Idontcare in that the only time that I don't have >20 windows open is when I'm imaging my drive.

Core i7-2600K (@4.2), 8GB RAM (soon to be 16GB, I'm often running low on RAM), 300GB SSD + 1.5TB HD, 3GB Radeon 7950.

Specs below.

Mostly use my machine for general use cases, plus gaming, app development, etc... Oddly, haven't really needed to transcode anything in a while, since most of my devices handle 1080p MKVs directly from... outside sources. :whiste:

I can't believe I've already had my system for 2 years, and see little reason to change it in the next 3. Just recently upgraded my video card from a 6950 to 7970.

Although I don't do 3D rendering or photo editing, my workstation work is... something else

Running a PhIIX6 1055t @ 3.4ghz (Turbo @ 4ghz). I multitask a ton. Not unusual for me to have 2~3 browsers open (10+ tabs each), a few VMs, the entire (Microsoft) office suite, plus some data analysis software open at the same time.

Very happy with the X6 (it was either that or a i5-750 at the time) but it is getting to be about that time for an upgrade.

I'm an odd duck then. I like to queue up a bunch of transcode jobs in TMPGEnc, set the priority to low, and then while that is crunching in the background I fire up some Dragon Age or other.

I'm one of those people who likes to think that if their computer is doing something productive then what I do with my time in the meantime is not a waste of time So gaming is guilt-free provided I am doing it while I am waiting for my computer to finish some other productivity-related process in the background.

Its silly, I know, but I've been that way for ages and have no plans to change

I use my 2600K desktop and XPS 12 for the following:

The above + Gaming

The laptop sometimes have problems doing simple things so I use the desktop more. And of course, running Starcraft 2 needs being plugged in, so why bother with a Laptop?

No, I am not a multi-tasker by any means. I close every application and "app" I can, especially on the Laptop. It just annoys me to see an unused window.

Base 2012 Mac mini for office work (i5 3210m!), gave up on video encoding/transcoding a long while back (can't be bothered), i7/680 only for gaming and nothing else. Laptop for ebooks, if that (can't stand e-readers, soon to be replaced by a Macbook Air). I prefer systems used for separate tasks, rather than a single box for everything.

I use the system in my sig for web browsing etc., gaming and as a workstation (DAW/music production). Multi-tasking in the sense that I usually have a bunch of Chrome tabs open etc. when running games or the DAW, but never more than one processor intensive task at a time.
