I am looking for a nice notebook to be used as a desktop replacement. I am really not concerned with size. My number one concern is the LCD. I want the best screen that is at least 15" in size. I don't need a super powered 3D gaming system. Just something that is very snappy and responsive with usual tasks such as email, internet, word, photo manipulation, and games such as Red Alert, Rise of Nations, etc.

I used to have a Dell Inspiron 8100 with the SXGA screen which I was very happy with while I had it. I have been leaning towards the new Dell 9100 or maybe an IBM Thinkpad R series. How does the screen on the IBM compare to the Dell? At this price, quality is also very important and I keep hearing everyone say that the build quality of the Dells is not as good as the IBM.

ibm probably has the best build quality out of all the notebook manufacturers

dell's quality doesn't match ibm in any way...even the latitudes

ibm seems to be more mobile then desktop replacement if you know what i mean...you can go for the emachine that users on this forum all love, or go with voodoo/sager one

the inspiron 9100 seems to be pretty good for the price too

IMO screen wise... Dell > IBM

Get the 8600 / 9100 with a WSVGA/WUXGA and a 7200 rpm Hdd...

There is always the Emachines... I am extremly happy with mine Can even upgrade the A64 to a fast DTR processor later. It has a zif socket which makes it easier.

I still can't make up my mind. How does the Pentium M compare to the P4 with HT? I am thinking maybe the Dell 3.0Ghz 9100 or the 8600 with a 1.5Ghz PM. I think I will be happier with the Dell widescreen LCD, but there is something about the IBM that is calling me. From what I have read it seems the IBM is tops in construction but their screen might not be as good as the Dells. Also how does the construction of the R series compare to the T series? I keep hearing everyone raving about the T41, but think I will be upset with the smaller 14" screen.
