Asus Z97-PRO Mother Board
Intel Core 17-4790K @ 4 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GT 640
16 Gig DDR3 RAM
Win 10 64 w/ all updates
250 Gig Samsung SSD 840 EVO
4 More Int and Ext HDDs total 12 TByte

Been running this config for years with no problem. All of sudden only SOME apps seem to be very slow.

Quicken data file takes very long time to open. Folder size utility takes about 6 times longer to scan C: drive. Checking C: for errors (on Properties Tool tab) works but takes about 10 minutes….way longer than before. (No errors found).

I‘ve optimized C:, run chkdsk, Microsoft Memory tests, cleaned system, re-started, stopped unnecessary programs from loading / running etc. No help. Running Samsung drive utility, Samsung Magician, looks to me like drive speed is OK. I’ve watched task manager as the above programs load / run. Have not seen any unusual CPU, Memory, or Disk usage.

I am at a loss. Any help will be appreciated. Would also like recommendation for overall System diagnostic utility (preferably free).

Benchmark Pic is attached. I am not certain of how to interpret it. The 6/20 benchmark shows it running faster than the 4/20, but the one I just ran also shows faster than the 4/20 but slower than the 6/20. Even if write has slowed down significantly as indicated between today and 6/20 would that have an impact on loading Quicken data file or assessing file sizes by the Folder Size utility? Seems this would be more reading.....which has not changed.

I don't know what this means but scanning Over Provisioning with Magician shows it as Unallocated.

Don't know what this means either but benchmark is substantially lower than these specs. Maybe my system does not support the spec speeds??

Specs

Trim is turned on and has been since this system was born.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Samsung specs are as follows

Sequential Read Speed540 MB/s
Sequential Write Speed410 MB/s
Random Read Speed94K
Random Write Speed35K

By these measures that C: ssd should be replaced. Not saying its the sole drag on performance but replacing it will be a start on an improvement.

Well folks,

A huge senior moment has gotten the best of me. After spending a week or so trying to figure out what was slowing down some applications on my desktop, I installed the same apps on our two new laptops.

Lo and behold ………..the apps on the laptops behaved the same as my desktop! At least my desktop has received a HUGE tune up. Returning unopened 500 Gig SSD.

Thanks for your assistance,
CASE CLOSED!

No offense intended, but you are kidding me aren't you? Have you really read this thread before suggesting such a rudimentary step?

You just have to accept that sometimes people don't read / half-read the OP then respond without reading the rest of the thread first

So what app is causing the slowdown? You acted like you should have expected it.

Also, the 840 EVO is known to be problematic in terms of long-term performance; I don't know if the latest firmware updates truly fixed the problem.

I think I am going to spring for the 500G 870 EVO, but got to make sure I have MB slot first.
I'm guessing an update to the software is causing the problems then? What software is it if I may ask?
Please see OP #1, third paragraph.

I've got an 840 evo 1tb, an 860 evo 1tb and a 970 evo+ 1tb NVMe.
The two sata EVOs are pretty much the same speed tbh, the NVMe is obviously significantly faster.

Thanks, I never bother learning about this kind of stuff until I have the need. Unbelievable that one can purchase the 970 1Tb for around $140

I thought by your later response you found some app to be problematic in terms of overall system performance (ie. some app slowing everything else down), as opposed to one app just being slow when you do X with it.
Than you for your assistance. I was probably not clear in my explanation.
