Desktop turning off during boot

My computer is a Core 2 Duo E6300, Gigabyte DS3, 1gb of ram and a Geforce 6500 with Vista Business. It is going on a year old. When I try to turn it on it will randomly shut off at different times during boot. Sometimes at the POST screen and other times at the screen that says Start Windows normally or in between those two screens. Any idea on the problem? I was thinking my power supply is failing but looking for other opinions.

I'm also think that it's the power supply. But it could also be an overheated CPU.

I got a xclio goodpower 500w power supply to replace my old one and it is still turning off during boot. I also reseated the Cpu. Anyone have any other ideas.

Sounds like a memory issue to me. Make sure it's getting the required amount of voltage. Usually in the BIOS they have the voltage set to automatic and at times this can cause issues, instead set it to the exact required voltage. If that doesn't help, try taking out a stick of memory so only one stick is in the PC, if it fails, put the one you took out in, and take the other one out. Or just as a friend if you can borrow a stick of RAM and use that exclusively in your system to see if it boots normally.

Second vote for memory. If you can get it to get past post, run a memtest bootcd and test it out.

I tried both sticks individually in each slot and still no go. Also the computer won't stay on long enough for me to change the bios settings.

Also sometimes it will get past post and other times it turns off before post.

well, since you replaced the PSU, it sounds like either A)overheating cpu or B)Motherboard issues.

Would the cpu overheat in less than 30 seconds? Thats about the longest amount of time it will stay on. I am using the Intel stock heatsink with Artic Silver. So is it probably motherboard then?

I highly doubt it's overheating simply because of the time frame of the issue. If anything, that sounds like a voltage problem to me. I still think it's worth trying out a friends RAM, that way that will be ruled out and we can confirm that it is a mobo or a BIOS issue. But before buying a new mobo, considering you don't have much to lose, trying removing the CMOS battery for 5 minutes. That will revert the BIOS settings to it's defaults.

I tried clearing the CMOS and putting BIOS to defaults but still no luck. So this pretty much means it's a motherboard problem?

It certainly sounds like it's a mobo problem then.
