Desktstar Hitachi HDD, what a POS !!!

The freaking POS crashed two days ago and Hitachi will not do anything about, so I ended up with a 80 gigs paper weight.
Never again, I should have know better and buy Western Digital

Yes, I'm mad about it,

Check out Seagate. If your HDD breaks after their warranty runs out you will have gotten alot more than cost out of it. Their Warranties last 5 years.

Happens with all brands. My Hitachi 120 GB has been humming along (and occasionally chirping) for about 2.5 years now.

I'm with jterrell, check out Seagate, although their drives are very reliable, if you do happen to have a problem you are not going to be sorry you purchased a Seagate with 5 year warranty standard gotta love it!

that was what, 3, 4, 5 years ago? IBM had a bad batch, contamiated clean room. everybody got RMA'ed.

there's bad stories about every HHD manufacture. just had bad luck, thats all.

i got two hitachi drives, one for over 2 years, still running flawlessly and a second for about a year, again, running flawlessly.

Hitachi's own brand of HDD had a decent reputation. Hitachi took over IBM's HDD line last year and inherited the Deathstar problems.
Hitachi had to RMA 2 of the IBM units for me last year also. Fortunately they were still in the 1 yr warranty period - barely.

If I needed a drive today, I would have no problem buying a Hitachi - especially with the great deals CrapUSA often has on them.

Bojangles139..Yes..I know things and reps. can change. I am fully aware of Hatachi picking up the "Deathstar" line from IBM...and you are probably right that there have been improvements. But, I suppose once you have been burned by poor product development and Quality Control you have a tendency to stay with those Mfgr's that have earned your trust. I guess its just a nice warm fuzzy feeling you get when you buy a trusted Name/Product.

hard drives die. whether you are in warranty or not depends how lucky you are. GET OVER IT. making statements like 'i will never buy blah blah' are idiotic.

It is a failure component, get used to it. I have a WD that is taking a dump on me right now. I've had others DOA... sucks when it happens, I know. Fact of computer life I guess.

You can get a new Hitachi 250 gig for 125 bucks. Good deal.

I'd get you a new Seagate 200 gig for $69.00... How you gonna beat that?!

Let's see, a component failed outside of warranty, and the manufacturer won't replace it.
So you get mad at them for that...

For all of you that it did not read the original post correctly. I'm not complaining about a component out of warranty for a year or more, but what about 3 WEEKS. So before you make a smart comment, like being and IDIOT or getting MAD because the manufaturer will not replace it pay attention why I started this post.
To the rest I thanks for your comments and symphaty.

i feel for you eltano1 i really do....i wont buy hitachi aka ibm....nor western digital, for the same reason. my last western digital failed the day after warranty was up, no signs or nothing, just died....wd would do nothing about it, said it was out of warranty period, well in my job we have things like that happen and if it is a case such as mine or yours, we make it right and warranty anyway, for the reason that if it failed that soon after expiration, there were problems to begin with usually, and werent caught soon enough...not everyone recognizes the warning signs of defective items, just my 2 cents.....

This happend to me too not too long ago. My IBM drive died just a few months after warranty and that was it. It seems like they pre-program their drives to die right after the warranty goes out.

I've got a bunch of IBM/Hitachi drives, had them for years now.

While one of the newest ones, a 120 GB 7K250 SATA did begin to fail on me (not a total failure, but a SMART warning, which resulted in an RMA), I stand by these drives, they've served me well.

I usually buy the fastest drive available, and every time I was building a rig, IBM/Hitachi was at or near the top. Yes, I've heard a lot about reliability problems and if this continues, I'll probably go the Western Digital way the next time around.

So, because it's almost under warranty, they should replace it?
As sad as it is when a drive goes, the warranty is n years, no more and no less, expecting any more is just silly, HGST, Maxtor, etc aren't your friends, they're big companies out to make money.

WD has one of the lower overall reliability ratings on StorageReview.com... And I agree. The HD makers generally offer one of the longest warranties in the computer biz, so once it's up - it's up! I think these complainers were probably running sans backup so the main source of the problem is staring back at them from the mirror...
