If you dropped the AA & AF it`d probably run smoothly. AA & AF is not essential however you look at it.

Also the demo doesnt save my preferences for keys and mouse buttons.
Goto ......\My Documents\Deus Ex 2 Demo\
Goto the propeties for "User.ini". Un-check "read-only".
It`ll then save your settings.

I remember GTA3 was like this! It was horrible! Ran choppy even if you had a top-o-line 1.5ghz Dell or something.

I'm probably going to pick up a 256 mb 9800 XT for Christmas and if that doesn't pick up performance I'm going to freak out.

pfff, you guys are so spoiled. I have a Athlon 2200+, GF4 Ti4600, 512 mb ram pc2100. Ive been playing the game on 800x600, medium - low settings. I get around 20 or so fps, but who cares, just play the game! i played the original deus ex on a GF2 mx200, and i loved it. Just because your system cant push out 60+ fps doesnt mean its a bad game, it just mean your precious hardware isnt able to keep up.

and i know your all going to say "well, it cant even run on the top of the line cards, so stfu!" well, at least its pushing hardware now. the last few months hardware has been so far ahead of software that it was disgusting. Now, software finally caught up, so quit your b!tching and either deal with it or stfu.

If they're going to produce a game that cannot be properly run at the settings it is created to run it, why shouldn't I be upset? If it's advertised to have these fantastic graphics and this and that and then CAN'T perform, it's my right to be angry. It isn't just that it's 'pushing hardware' it's the fact that it's a horrible port FROM the XBOX. There is evidence that it was tweaked for an XBOX and then never changed back for PCs for the PC release. Stop fooling yourself and realize that they pushed out a poorly written game.

If you tweak the mouse lag setting above, the game will run fine at a reasonable resolution (1078x7whatever). I promise.

it may be only moderately playable on an ok system (see above)
but i've been running into other problems as well, video will cut out to a black screen for a few seconds at a time during game play, this happens fairly often and at least 1 full crash.
imho, this game definitely needs some patches and polish before i would recommend it to others. though, to be fair, the annoying video problem could be the catalyst 9 drivers.

Like said above, it's settings are for an xbox and they didn't bother to fix this before the game shipped. Either wait for the patch or be prepared to do a lot of tinkering with the ini files. Here's a link to a site with instructions for modding the ini files: Official DX:IW Tweak Site

Many have said the original DX was buggy. I purchased the G.O.T.Y version and ran GREAT on my lappie with a 650 PIII and 8meg onboard vidio. I guess the original was crap next to the GOTY version? Maybe we should wait for the GOTY version of DX:IW

Runs like Sh*t on my system too. I'm running a P4 2.6 800FSB HT with 1 GB Dual Channel DDR with a Radeon 9800 PRO 128, and I can barely run a 1024. WTF!!

Asuming it goes GOTY on PC.

Dont wanna hijack the thread, but for tweaks on getting ATI cards running smoothly, check my thread here.
I worked for me.
Ive got;
XP1800, 768mb PC133, 9700pro @Stock. And i can get it running quite smoothly at 1280x1024@max. No AA/AF.

The rig: Athlon XP 3200+/1GB RAM/GeForce FX 5900 - easily in the 97th percentile of computers. Able to play nearly everything at 1600x1200 and all eye candy on, some with 2X AA.

Fire DX:IW up at 1280 rez and no AA and it runs like ASS!!! Instant flashback to the first DX demo that was so 3dfx-slanted, it chugged like Courtney Love going thru Rush Limbaugh's Dumpster. Dropping rez to 800x600 (w/2X AA) smoothes things out a bit, but it looks ugly, the models are mannequins and I'm immediately hating it.

I usually diss people who get all conspiracy theory about console and PC games, but the moment I saw how you adjust stuff and a check-box for "Vibration", I knew that the freaks may be onto something. (Unlike KOTOR. Ahem...)

Looking at stuff like the inability to retain key settings do to a file set to read-only makes this one of the worst QAed games I've ever seen. Jeez...did Warren Spector find some of Romero's leftover crack?

Making these changes made the demo run acceptably on my TBred@2400/1Gig@209/9700p, except for the ring area in the Greasel pit.

With my 9700p and Cat3.9c's, bloom caused small vertical dark grayish bars to appear over all surfaces, especially in cutscenes. I think bloom was designed for the Xbox version. The game looks much better with it off IMO.

Also FSAA in the drivers doesn't work too well, it results in flashes of garbled colors whenever moving the mouse. What is strange is that with FSAA in the drivers set to app preference, and multisampling in the game set to "1X" there is still evident antialiasing.

TheVrolok, your computer is far from incapable of pushing good graphics. It's the game's design that is at fault here. Not to get too far off of the topic of performance with this game, but I believe that the PC version was an afterthought and the Xbox version took precedence in the development.

As for the gameplay, I read a post that pretty much sums it up (not the exact quote): You can pick up a dead corpse in body armor and throw it 30 feet but you can't pick up this barrel?.

Let us know how much you get for it, 'cause I've been thinking the same way.

OMG. Think like that and you`ll never get to play one of the best games of the year.
If you can`t be arsed tweaking, then do you lot want me to post my pre-tweaked Default.ini & DXUI.ini files?

Patch Out.
Direct DL Link (About 2.5mb in size)
Changes contained within the v1.1 patch

- Defaulted Bloom to off when starting a new game.
- Adjusted mouse movement to eliminate feeling of "lagginess".
- Adjusted the HUD so that it is pushed toward the edges of the screen.
- Added option for turning all shadows off. This can massively improve performance, especially at higher resolutions.
- Shrunk all text sizes.
- Reworked mouse-based UI control within the inventory and biomod screens:
. Right-clicking will now swap items in the inventory and toolbelt screen.
. Added buttons for installing weapon mods and biomods.
. The biomod/inventory/datavault hotkeys are now toggles (the same buttons will now both open and close these subscreens).
- Added quicksave/quickload keys. (F10/F12)
- Non-hostile AI's will now go hostile much sooner if shot.
- Eliminated monitor resyncing during level transition and savegame loads.
- Increased the headshot damage multiplier for the pistol.
- Increased the damage of the stun prod.

Giving it a shot now .. I hope this fixes things a bit. I definitely sense a performance increase with the application of the patch. Nothing too drastic, but now I can run shadow quality/texture/character detail at their highest modes at 1024x768 and it's as playable as it used to be with all low settings at 800x600. I still wish there would be something more drastic.

cool,
my system now runs 1280 x 1024 with decent game play. finished it by the way, havent gone through all of the possible endings but it was really good i thought. kind of like the matrix movies, nothing is as fresh and new as the first one but this was still very enjoyable.
