Perhaps controversially this time around combat won't be influenced by stats, but will rely purely on your personal marksmanship skills.

What's more, stealth will now rely on a cover system rather than shadows, and damage will be dealt with by a very Call of Duty-style auto-heal.

Bah.

That article indicates that this game will be closer to IW than the first DX, despite what they claim about learning from IW's mistakes. IW was still very good despite all its issues and I'll probably like this game anyway, but maybe it was too much to hope for another all time classic like DX.

Some of the things in that article scare me, but since I have only been looking forward to 2 games recently (and it doesnt look like KOTOR 3 will ever be made) I am going to stay hopeful.

If it sucks ass I will no longer have a reason to play video games anymore.

I'm an avid CoD fan and I don't like the sound of the new health system - Deus Ex really had something good going with each body part having its own health and everything. The new augs do sound cool, though. And they have the original writers, so the story could be good.

Sounds like another slap in the face for Dues Ex fans.

Is Warren Specter working on this, did he have anything to do with IW?

the ending of the story of ths game would probably be terriblle just like IW. They did a cool thing to give three alternatives to the ending of DX at my first impression in IW is that the canonical ending of the past events turned out to be Tracer Tongs proposal how does Denton end up with merged with that AI???? Instead all they did is put you in the same predicament of alternatives. I expect the same thing in DX 3.

Why yes, but it is a plus if you like games that require little thought.

No.

Waren Specter's new company:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junction_Point_Studios
Junction Point has not yet released any games, but is currently working on an unspecified "fantasy" title.

"The developers also have original writer Sheldon Pacotti by their side on this one, in addition to the presence of both Harvey Smith and Warren Spector."

According to that article (the article also has a source of its own at the bottom of it): http://www.actiontrip.com/rei/...news.phtml?id=100408_3

The auto-heal doesn't scare/disappoint me as the "...Shanghai skyline, now split into two layers with the rich on the top and the poor in perpetual twilight below..." line does. No game implemented politics and morals into a storyline as well as Deus Ex did, and Deus Ex 2 was just as dumbed down in that regard as it was when it came to combat and RPG elements.

Well, that's sort of what Deus Ex did with the mole people, isn't it? It was just done really well and in a clever manner.

In a way, but even the mole people were more developed. They had also gone underground to be independent of the outside world, and even had their own mini-government set up, as the bum who was kicked out will tell you. In Deus Ex 2 the "Inclinator" simply separated people into two opposite groups: one where everyone has a hoity-toity accent and listens to pop music, another where everyone wears thuggish clothes and refers to greasels as "gobs". In both cases the differences were so exaggerated that I killed everyone. The same can be said for the Templars (wacked-out fundies) and ApostleCorp (where everyone is bald and wears lab-coats), or any other group.

Still, no company reveals much storyline in announcements like these, but I'm not being too optimistic. The "No augmented people allowed" sign in the teaser video wasn't exactly an obscure political/historical reference either.

I liked IW's basic plot premises a lot and thought they were even better than the original game in some ways. The problem was that they didn't flesh out anything in the story and it had nowhere near the same level of depth and detail as DX. Despite that, the story was still better than 95% of other FPSs out there.

The biggest problem was the gameplay and combat, and from that article it looks like little is changing in that respect. They're bringing back normal ammo but there are still no skills and I'm betting that there are no multiple health locations either (given that health regenerates), which would bring it on par with any average FPS. The stealth elements seem to be dumbed down too, if lighting makes no difference anymore.

This could still be a very good game if they get the story and level design right and maintain the nonlinear feel, but it will fall short of being a worthy sequel to DX.

I just hope that they take the time to develop the background for the setting like they did in DX. It was fun blowing stuff up when I was little, but as I played it again when I was older I noticed that there was a lot of interesting philosophical stuff that drove the way the DX universe developed.

Actiontrip just got their info from CVG, and the original CVG article states:

drafted in the consultative talents of original writer Sheldon Pacotti, while also gaining the blessing of both Harvey Smith and Warren Spector on the project.

So no, he's not involved, and "blessing" doesn't really mean much except "go ahead and make it" at this point. Hard to say what "consultative talents" will mean either. Plus, given the way IW turned out in comparison to the first, I'm not sure I'd trust Smith's opinion.

whew I thought it was gonna be a sequel, which would mean screwing with the endings from the previous game again, which were pretty damn final this time.

It sounds like they are gonna remove even more RPG elements which isn't gonna do any favor to fans on the game play side. I hope the world is deeper this time. Deus Ex 2 had a decent central plot but it felt shallow compared to Deus Ex. There were none of the background political, economic and scientific (technobabble but added to the universe) information that were everywhere in Deus Ex, and the "cities" felt like dead small towns. I'm not holding my breath for this one either.

FUCK autoheal. Seriously, this is about when I link to yahtzee or another internet celeb that has literally torn autoheal a new one and developers still. don't. get. it.

I have a tiny shred of hope for DX3, mainly based on the fact that they should be so goddamn embarrassed for releasing #2 that it should be a personal challenge of theirs to release something better for #3 (and by they I mean Eidos, I realize Ion Storm isn't around anymore). Just remember Eidos, Ukraine has developers that can do a better job than you at this point.
