I had my deviated septum punched out last year, and the sinuses roto-rootered. In hindsight, it was worth it (the time lost, the recovery grossness, the COST) because I can breath much better and I haven't had a major sinus infection since, but it does leave you open for other problems, potentially. My septum took a 90^ turn and almost had the passage closed. 20 minutes? My surgery took almost 2 hours! I was down full-time for about 2 days, but was out making service calls 3 days later, just easing along and not getting stupid.

In my case, I don't get big sinus infections now, something I have been plagued with since I was an infant, but I have had a small infection for the past 6 months... and I'm having a problem communicating the problem with my doctor. Unfortunately, now that I'm off the recovery time, every time I go in, I wind up with a $400 bill after he scopes my snoot, and all he does is give me antibiotics... that don't work.

In the end, I'd still do it, even given my 'trade one problem for another' results. I can breath better.

Not to derail this thread, but this caught me by surprise. Smoking pot is far worse for fitness than eating ice cream, particularly cardio, is it not?

Glad you're getting your nose fixed up, OP. I'm sure you'll be up-and-running 20 minutes just because in no time.

So.. to get technical, it really depends on what you smoke, how much, and how you do it.

Smoking pot can be harmful, but you can't OD on it, it's not really toxic in any realistic amount, and there's a wide variety of strains that can provide a wide variety of results.

Taking bong rips of a strong Indica will likely give you a sore throat, immediately, and if you do that constantly you'll end up with severe bronchitis. Not good. Not to mention Indica's are the 'motivation killers' that make pot famous for making people lazy.

But if you lightly smoke a sativa, or better yet, vape it, and don't do a lot, it's going to be less harmful to your athleticism than say... pepsi. I can smoke a little bit of a sativa and perform 'better' because it helps me focus but it doesn't dull my senses either. I could smoke a joint of a strong sativa, and still go run a 10k without any measurable impact on my performance. A joint of a strong Indica? I won't find my way out of the house to even get to the 10K.

To that end... the ENT said I had no visible signs in my mouth, nose, or throat that I'm a smoker. I told him I smoked pot, and he said he wouldn't know if I didn't tell him. That's a far cry from what a tobacco smoker deals with. I actually went into the ENT thinking my throat discomfort and breathing problems were from pot, and that's what i told him. The pain I felt in my chest was not from pot, but from acid reflux. He was even able to show me how the base of my tongue was orange and said if my tongue is that orange I will definitely feel discomfort from the acid reflux. I've been on meds for it for the past 2 months and I feel remarkably better.

So yea, I drink too many energy drinks because I'm always tired. Doc said I might be tired because I get bad sleep because of my breathing.

It's all speculation; but now that I'm aware of the deviated septum, a lot of my problems make sense and align with the symptoms of a deviated septum. So I'm really curious to see what results i get.

Fortunately, I don't think mine was that bad. Doctor said it was moderate-to-severe, but not severe enough to be obvious to anybody that doesn't know better. He even had to scope out my nose to see it; it's not something that is obvious to people off the street.

Well, ok. I guess. I don't smoke pot and never have so I am admittedly "one of those" people. Just seems strange to me that breathing in not-normal-atmosphere on a semi-regular basis would not do some kind of damage that would manifest itself in ways that are more significant than eating a reasonable portion of ice cream at the same frequency. I think it's unquestionable that tobacco would be far worse, as you've agreed above. I would expect the pot to be on the same level as poor air quality, or perhaps marginally less impactful. But in any case, ice cream is calories, fat, sugar. If it is part of a reasonable diet to begin with.... i dunno.

To be clear, I don't mean to say that smoking pot right before a run is any different or the same as eating ice cream before a run. I'm thinking in terms of lifestyle. In any case, it doesn't really matter. Just thinking out loud.

Totally understood. It's just important to remember cannabis and tobacco are wildly different substances with wildly different consequences from abuse. I don't drink alcohol, smoke cigs, etc.

I had the operation yesterday.

It was supposed to take 45-60 minutes. Ended up taking nearly 5 hours.

Apparently once they got in there, the damage was far more severe than expected. My doctor told my gf (while I was in recovery) that once he got started, he couldn't stop until the job was done right.

OMG. Even with the plastic stents in my nose, i can still breath much much better than I could when I went in. I'm still a little stuffy and coughing up some blood (bloody nasal drip I suppose); but I can already tell I should have done this 10 years ago. My doctor said the stent in my right side (which was fine) is only blocking about half the air that my messed up side was, so since my left side is now opened up, it's still allowing more air than when it was deviated.

I'll have the stents out in about 10 days and will get to experience breathing without any obstruction. Based on how much better it is now, I suspect the doctor was completely right about how badly the deviated septum impacted my breathing.

Did they give you any good pain killers? Wanna share?

Just kidding. Glad the surgery went well. Sounds like you had a great surgeon. I'm looking forward to the follow ups and your first 3 hour marathon.

Please keep us updated, I am interested in your progress. Right now, if i block my right nostril and try to breathe through my left, it's like breathing through a thin straw. I would likely pass out after a few minutes (it's not always that bad, but it is like this probably at least half the time)

Congrats! And forget all the naysayers in this thread. If you feel like this is going to greatly enhance your ability to train, believe it with all your heart!

Even a placebo effect is effective if it means that it will contribute to your ability to go at it harder.

Oh man this sounds awesome. I need this so badly. Does it affect your sense of smell any?

I wouldn't be surprised if it did affect my sense of smell.

But right now I still have plastic stints in my nose and quite a bit of a bloody boogery mess to deal with.

But even with that.. I still feel like I can breath better. I was just singing along to some music and noticed it was easier to manage my breathing between words. So I have high hopes about the final results when everything's cleared out.

bleeding has stopped. I was able to start doing nasal/sinus flushes with distilled water and saline. It's helped rinse a lot of the crusty blood and crap out.

ok, so the plastic tubes are incredibly annoying. It's fairly healed now, but I'm still having splotches of blood here and there come out after flushing. Makes me think I keep reopening one of the stitches. They're sewn in really tightly, so even lightly rubbing my nose puts strain on the sutures. plus.. some of the threads of the sutures are tickling the inside of my nose like a stiff, dry nose hair.

3-4 more days hopefully.

Still breathing better though, especially on the bad side. Can't wait for the stents to come out.

Just got the stents out.

Holy shit.

I can breathe. I mean.. I really had no idea.

Even with the stents in, it was better then before the surgery. but now.. it's just like... effortless.

100% worth it.

Damn. Awesome man. Sometimes I don't like my nose even if I don't have a stent issue. Its just a tiny nose and is like trying to breathe though, well, a tiny nose. Wish I had a bigass nose like a high performance air intake.

I have a big nose! So I was always wondering if something was wrong. And there was.

I only spent 1 week with the stents in place. I thought they were about an inch long, but when they came out, nope.. like 3 inches long.

Just checking in for a serious update.

The quality of sleep I've gotten since having the stents removed has gone up substantially. The past two nights have been some of the best sleep I've gotten. My surgeon did say I'll get some benefit right away, but it will take my brain as much as 3 months to get used to normal nasal breathing again so it should get better over time. I'm still having to remind myself 'you can breath through your nose again'.
