I haven't been able to breath out of my nose too well for a while now, and I'm having surgery in a few days to repair what my doctor termed "the nose of a professional boxer". Thanks, doc.

Anyone ever had this done or know someone who has? I guess they can do it with local anesthesia, which frankly doesn't sound that pleasant. My dad had a similar procedure a loooong time ago, and of course he likes to tell me how he had the whole thing done while being completely awake; nose re-broken, sounds of splintering bone and cartilage, blood, real fun stuff. Dad's love telling stories like that.

Anyway, I just called my doc and left a message to determine if I'm being put out or not, but if anyone's had this relatively common procedure done, I'm curious about your experience. Were you under local or general anesthesia? How was the pain/bleeding afterward?

I had this procedure done several years back.
Surgery was fine, under general anestesia, woke up with a little bleeding down the back of my throat (causes gagging) but once that was under control, I was fine.

Doctor proscribed codein, which makes me throw up, replaced codein with something else and was much better. Spent a week sleeping sitting up (i believe this is mandatory).

After a week, was the worst part, removing the packing material from your healing nose. This was possibly the worst pain I have ever felt.
Most likely youll have to use saline moisturizers for about a year post surgery.

I had this done twice - once when I was younger, they didn't do too much b/c they were afraid of stunting my nose's growth - and 2 years ago.

As the poster above mentioned, I went under general anesthesia. You wake up with a pretty sore nose which turns into a huge stuffy pressure headache after a while. You can't concentrate well and it's hard to eat. As mentioned above, after a few days you can take the tube and packing out. That process reminded me of the Total Recall scene where Aaahnold pulls the tracker out of his nose.

The stuff was packed in tight and went all of the way up to my sinuses. You bleed pretty bad after that comes out but it clears up quickly and your headache abates within a few hours.

You're left with a splint in each nose which hurt. You have to keep it clean, moisturized...etc. After a while the swelling goes down and it heals up.

My 2nd doc forgot to remove a splint, frigging thing was in my sinus. I kept smelling plastic and I thought it was a stitch until I shined a flashlight up there. Oops.

Anyway, it made a huge difference in my life. I don't snore as much, I breathe far better...etc.

Don't worry about it, it's a pretty common surgery.

I had an ethmoidectomy and other chronic sinusitus related things about a year ago. It sucked ass. They shoved a breathing tube down my throat (they didn't tell me they were going to do that) so I woke up with a bad sore throat. Bloody nose at the slightest movement for a few days. Bloody nose every time I peed for a week. The headaches I was hoping it would help got much worse (doctor said air hitting new parts of sinuses activated my migraines more). Being in a car for a couple of months afterwards was unbearable (more because of the new heights my migraines had reached). I imagine the stuff they're doing to you won't be as intrusive though.
