That one's a bit tougher. Can you prove the assertion wrong? Okay, tell me what country you think had the best education system between 1800 and 1950.

The Chinese were still using sticks and flintlocks. Japanese and Germans, possible rivals.

What do you think?
probably the prussians -> germans. maybe the brits. it certainly wasn't the US. the US probably doesn't even begin to compete until after WW2. the US has had and continues to be the world leader in college education (no thanks to UoP, WGU, and all the other fly by night places). but that's not education as a whole.

The UK seems to have had some institutions that have been around awhile.

What do you know about the German school system? It was pretty good until the Nazis came along.

They may have been a bit more advanced but I'm still saying the US system was better.

From everything I have read the German school systems are still highly rated these days.

I have no knowledge of it first hand, but the thread is about Devos, and if you think she is going to improve the US school system you are a fool.

So back on topic, what do you think she will do to improve things ?

You have been asking for proof, prove to me she is not totally incompetent.

It is already obvious she has no idea what she is doing.

You're endorsing unqualified people in the upper echelons of government, apparently.

Or shitty parenting.

That's an interesting point.

You wanna know why Charter schools work so great right now? As a parent of 2 kids that went to (literally) the highest performing gradeschool in WI, I noticed that every kid in that school had parents (and teachers!) that were active and participating in their kid's education. The school was better because you had parents that actively sought out an alternative for their kid and then were involved in the school all day, every day in countless capacities. You had teachers that sought out something different and wanted to blaze a trail and make something special. There is NO question that is why their Charter Schools, and Charter Schools in general end up looking better.

In WI public schools have consistently been defunded under Walker for years. And people cry over and over that our public school system sucks. Gee, I wonder why. Now Walker is assigning 100s of millions back into schools (after ripping a billion+ out) and applying it to mostly rural school systems (shocker!) meanwhile the urban schools continue to decay beyond repair (literally and figuratively). And the right is praising him for funding schools now. So he took $100 from schools, gave $50 back and the GOP is praising him.

This is an exception and not the rule though. If there were tons and tons of charter schools and they become the norm, do you think there would be as much family participation? Of course not. And the results would reflect that.

That's okay, charter schools won't be held to the same level of accountability, so they can do whatever math they need to make them look successful enough for their for-profit corporate owners to keep taking that sweet federal cash.

Why are you speaking of him in past tense?

I blame Betsy Bonehead here. News of her mind-numbing confirmation clearly distracted me from all the good things Douglas has been doing lately (and all those people talking about it, of course).

This story, and the GOP sockpuppets spewing away over it, really take me back to the wisdom of another well-read republican, also concerned about education.

the prussians were the first to have mandatory primary education (in 1717).

the US was always a hodgepodge in comparison. there's been quality education available in the northeast since the 1600s, but you still had a lot of one room schoolhouses throughout the country until the 1900s (at the earliest).

anyway, it was your assertion, and you've done nothing to support it.

correct. but the question is about the system as a whole, not the quality of part of the system.

Detroit Free Press editor Stephen Henderson expressed concerns over DeVos’s nomination, noting that "DeVos isn't an educator, or an education leader. She's not an expert in pedagogy or curriculum or school governance. In fact, she has no relevant credentials or experience for a job setting standards and guiding dollars for the nation's public schools. She is, in essence, a lobbyist - someone who has used her extraordinary wealth to influence the conversation about education reform, and to bend that conversation to her ideological convictions despite the dearth of evidence supporting them."[54][55] Rebecca Mead of The New Yorkerquestioned the efficacy of Michigan's charter school system, which DeVos has supported.[21]

Or shitty educators and administrators.
so your solution is to bring in someone with zero educational background, but just happened to be a HUGE contributor to hair furor.
Right.. well thought out, what could go wrong, it's just childrens' education we're fucking with, no down the road impact there

This is one nominee that I'm not sure what the big deal is about. I feel like democrats are wasting their time blocking inconsequential self-enriching corrupt cronies like Davos when they could be blocking slimy neo-fascist scum like Sessions or manipulative criminals like Price.

Davos is stupid but in all fairness so are most american children. We're a big, dumb nation. Davos isn't gonna make us that much dumber.
