i am better and ready to get back to work tomorrow, but now my wife is feeling poor! :Q

if she gets too sick, i will have to take care of her/the four year old and get the nine year old off to school, the fun never ends!

if i can just get the lab boxen dumped (~17Ghz crunching since wednesday afternoon) we should hold off the Rechenkraft'ers until i can get back into normal production (not super production, my remotes are currently unavailable indefinetly)

but i think with all the awesome output from the TeAm and my "normal" production, we can match Rechenkraft on a weekly basis

keep up the good work everybody!

ps. i am predicting we will hit 10 billion on new year's day (possibly new year's eve if production rises just a little) and the next protein change would then be Jan 7th

Oooooooooh.

As far as I can tell, they only outproduced us by about 8M folds yesterday. We can catch that up

Congratulations to the producers of the day and milestone makers!

Auto-recovery?? TELL ME! I've been having problems since the new update! (especially in Linux!)

nothing beats a total redo for any problems

upload everything
delete the directory
re-download a fresh zip/tar.gz
undo it
re-install
trouble will normally be gone

Auto-recovery?? TELL ME!
I don't know how to do it in Linux, but I'm sure someone here will.

In WindowsXP (installed as a service) I do this:

right-click 'my computer' => select 'management' => select 'services and applications' => select 'services' => find the distributed folding service in the list and right-click it => select 'properties'
=> select 'recovery' tab => for each of the three instances (1st failure, 2nd failure, subsequent failures) choose 'restart the service'. => apply, OK, exit.

I think that DF is especially sensitive to Overclocking (in my setup anyway). I run my machines at a point where they are completely stable for EVERYTHING ELSE but every once in a while, on one of the machines I get the little box telling me foldtrajlite has errored. It seems to happen when an upload has completed, and the service is trying to re-start. So it could be my NIC acting up from a high PCI frequency or the CPU itself (I have PC2700 RAM and it is nowhere near rated speed with FSB = 142, so I don't believe it is the RAM itself... maybe the northbridge?) Anyway, with the restart on failure set, I don't loose anything to speak of.

maybe there is an analogous fix for linux.

PS: yes, taking my machines to Stock speeds does solve the issue.... but that wouldn't be any fun at all!

FoBoT's suggestion of re-installation is a good one too. (Especially for the error.log thingy, since re-downloading got the fixed client files.)

-Sid

PS: here is a post from the 12-12 DF Daily about the error.log thingy.... maybe linux doesn't like writing to this file every couple miliseconds.... did you re-install after the auto-update? If not, you probably should. (be sure to do it with the NEW client files.... not the original ones)

(For anyone not familiar with the Error.log bugaboo on this last update, there was a minor problem with the first release of the update which allowed the error.log to grow in size at a pretty good clip as the client folded. Howard then released an updated update (about six hours later), but did not flag it for auto-installation.
He reasoned, that the original client was folding just fine and some people would prefer to have a large error.log file than run around updating all their clients again. If the file gets bigger than you want on your HD, you can just delete it periodically and no other ill-effects will occur if you do not. (according to Howard)
If you do wish to eliminate the large error.log file, you simply need to upload your results, stop the client, remove it, download the latest client and install.

DF is very sensitive to OC and RAM errors

a system that has a RAM problem that isn't noticeable by "normal" usage may exihibit itself under the intense usage of DF (especially if using the -rt option on a system with 128Mb or less)

good luck!

FoBoT is right on the money! ( DF is very sensitive to OC )

I am not so ready to blame it on hardware though. My machines are mainly an arcade for my son and his friends and they game for hours and hours with no difficulties at all. DF digs deeply into resources, but so do many other 'normal' apps. (AutoCad, OrCad and Games are the apps. I use that stress resources) I believe the issue really lies in the less sophisticated code that DF runs with perhaps a few too many shortcuts applied in the name of speedy operation. ANY system will have an error once in a while with data transfers (hence, the development of checksums, redundancy checks, etc... and applications which can react in ways other than shutdown when unexpected data interpretation occurs.)

Howard has done a fair amount of cut&paste development in addition to his own work, and I applaud his results even though I would not call them perfect, I wouldn't recommend tearing up your machine looking for "problems" if DF is the only application you have which tosses out an error every 36 hours or so. Correcting these things would not normally occur until the bigger picture has been settled. (the real job here is to get a computational method to predict protien formations.)

Just my $.02

Well, I didn't remove the old client from Linux, but I did re-download the new client and install it into a brand new directory, which I assumed would make any other DF installations irrelevant as long as I was running DF from the new one. But it still crashes every few hours in Linux. Thing is, DF was totally stable in Linux at 149FSB (2.68GHz) before the update, but now its crashing all the time even after I backed off the OC a touch. Today was actually the first time the Windows client crashed wtih the new client, so I'm not too worried about that, even though I did lose a few hours worth of production.

Sid, thanks for the auto-recovery tip, unfortunately, I'm still running Win98 so no-go on that. It seems like it would be simple enough to include an auto-recovery feature in the dfGUI client, since it would only have to restart the client when it shuts down. I also really wish there were a dfGUI for Linux...

Arrrrrggg.....First I get hit w/ a speeding ticket (my bad, forget when they were starting back up) now my xp1800 hasn't been folding for what appears to be the whole day!!! DFGui was green in the task bar and I assumed it was running. I've been checking my stats and they seemed low, I though we lost power at work again and I lost my work machine!! Grrrrr....

I took a quick look at the dfGUI source code, and adding auto-recovery capability would be a matter of a few lines of code.

CrazySaint,

Then make up the patch and send it in to Jeff (Gilchrist).

He'll probably want to add in a checkbox to the client (Auto-Restart Client or Auto-recovery or something).

I haven't actually taken a look at his source, guess I should, sometime.

On an unrelated note...

Team Rechenkraft are 4M behind us as of 1:05am NZDT (GMT +1300) - we might get passed sooner than we think!

I'll have a look it sometime then (though I'll likely forget... as usual, have many (MANY) more important things to do).

Maybe send him (Jeff Gilchrist) a feature request?

"kmmatney 1.7M "

Am I imaging things, or has the DF client gotten a lot faster in the last 2 weeks?

Also, a belated TeAm welcome to Terrahawk - I was away when you first joined. Nice output!!

Thanks for the welcome, kmmatney - the client is indeed a lot faster now than before

Just happened today (around 1900 GTM+1).

But as we lost about 30 GHz power this week, maybe that was only for short. We will see...

Ciao, Michael.

bunker,

I always leave the task manager minimized in my tray. Solid green means that everything is going ok. If not, then I check to see what's going on. If you're on Win 98 or something look at CPU utilization utilities (they're a dime a dozen).
