Hi there Folders,

Sorry for putting out the daily so late. Just wrapping up FoBoT's presents:

dfRestart restarts DF every X minutes.
dfDetect checks every X seconds to see if any of Y programs are running and if so stops DF (if it's running). It restarts DF after Z minutes.

The above only work with DF installed as a service, and must be installed in the same directory as DF (or you can copy sleep.exe over to where you install them)

For the rest of you (those who want to use the above can do so as well) there's dfKeepAlive which checks every X seconds to see if DF is running. If it isn't it starts it. Works with DF installed as a service and also not as a service. Can be installed in any directory.

Any files in common between the three with the same name are identical.

dfDetect and dfKeepAlive run totally hidden. So, for those people looking to install DF hidden on Win98 machines download dfKeepAlive, set it up (takes all of 10 seconds), and schedule it to run at startup instead of DF. It's that simple; no more "client went down and didn't notice, mumble, mumble, mumble."

NOTE: It's just come to my attention that there may be a missing dll. Try getting that here. You'd either want to put that in the same directory as DF, or, what will be more likely to work, in the Windows\system32 directory.
Please note, this is an early release and I've done some basic testing only. Also, most of it has been done in the wee hours of the morning (it's 5AM right now). I'll prolly redo the code in C/++ tomorrow, since it's simple enough anyway, but I'd appreciate some early testing. If you give it a try and it doesn't work, don't sweat it, the C/++ version will be guaranteed to work (though may not run hidden).
EDIT: OK, found what's going on. Give me a few minutes...
EDIT: OK, please install dfKeepAlive from the following link. It will set up JET so that you can run the apps. dfDetect should then work as well. ok, just checked that as well and it does.

Sorry for all the hassle, folks. FoBoT, I'll make up a C/++ version for you of dfDetect for tomorrow so that you don't have to go installing JET on a million and one machines.

Ok, on with the daily.

Tr3s Lunas hits 1M folds! (Welcome back, man! )

Hehe, thanks!

I tried out DF a few months back while sorting out some problems with F@H. (Don't like them being idle too long! :Q )

But I've been running F@H for about 6 months now and feel like a change, so I've switched over both computers to DF. They're a P3 600 and a P4 2.0 running 24/7. It's not much but it helps.

That's not too bad at all! We're in a *very* tight race with Rechenkraft.net so a little goes a long way!

NEWS FLASH!!!!!

from the DF forum, howard has posted

Yep, I'll aim for Dec. 31 I think, provided we're at 10 billion - that'll be a fresh start for the New Year. It'll get rid of those huge error.logs for the people who didnt manually grab the patch too, so I dont want this one to drag out too long. Remember you always have 24-48 hrs to 'turn in results' though (half credit from 24-48 hrs).

looks like the protein change will happen this week, on tuesday :\

guess i won't be leaving work early on tuesday :frown:

m0ti,

The ComCrap webspace won't let people download files with some extentions (.exe .zip .dll are some I know of.....)

to put it up there, you need to change the extention (to something like .eee .zzz .ddd) and tell people to rename it when they have it saved.

It sounds like the CPU : RAM : PCI ratio might not be set correctly on the MoBo (in BIOS)

If you have the FSB set to 133, I think you want to use the 4:4:1 setting (some MoBos default to 3:3:1 and you have to set it)

As to the source of a problem (RAM vs. CPU) I like to use memtest86 to test for bad RAM. It is a utility
that makes a bootable floppy. When you boot to it, it will start the test automatically. It goes through several tests (~20 minutes) and if any failures are noted, they will show on the screen. (It loops continuously, so you have to stop it (esc) when you have seen all you want.)

Good Luck!

SID, I was posting a question in regards to the DF file. Is there anything I need to know about it? Have to install a zip drive into the machine, getting tired of wasting CD's just to move a few files around! Also looks like I will have to start the dump process this morning, have 100k here on my laptop, 120k on the wife's machine, and 270k! on the other Win98 machine that has been giving me fits!

Well, here is the bad news.

Your MoBo doesn't seem to have those settings available for adjustment. (I just came from their website where I took a look at the manual)

The BIOS is attempting to set the clocks for you and doesn't seem to be able to do it right.

I did notice that the XP series of Athlons are not mentioned as compatible with this board.

It may be that the XP Athlons are not supported and that is why your BIOS can't deal with them.

What processor does the POST screen say you are running when you boot?

(sometimes flashing to the most recent BIOS will solve this kind of issue)

i couldn't wait, i downloaded and renamed and installed and it worked just fine

with the new protein change coming, i will experiment with these new tools until tuesday, then try rolling them out with the new protein to a small group of my remotes and see how it goes. if all goes well, i may be able to increase production a bit

it seems to be working fine

okay tracking the problem down, the L1 cache will not run at full speed! Not the memory or any driver problem! MemTest came up ok! Didn't find anything wrong elsewhere! But turned the L1 off and it was slower than dog crap, but came all the way up! The machine will run just fine with the memory FSB at 133 but the CPU FSB at 100! Once the CPU FSB is taken to 133 there are problems! FoBot, what do I need to do or configure the DF Keepalive? Do I need DF Detect and/or DFRestart? -Sid here comes the first dump 110k!

Intersting, DFGui show's it as an xp2100, and it is putting out 2.6 a sec! Better than the wife's XP1800 at full speed! Shows up as an XP1500 in the bios now, but has been running stable for 2 hours! Plus it has 240k to go out! Will wait till after 8 tonight to dump it!
Watch out muttley have you in my sights!

Yeah, you can just kill it to exit.

New releases in C/++ Win32 code is out now. Use that instead. Lighter weight and no installation headaches. You can kill the new ones to exit too.
