HiYa guyz,

If any of you have the know-how to help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.

As you have heard me whine about, sometimes on re-booting my machine DF doesn't get started right. It stays resident in memory and the system has no way of knowing it has stopped so it doesn't get restarted.

When I see this I do the following to get it going again (until the next boot)

1. delete the file c:\distribfold\foldtrajlite.lock
2. open up task manager, select the foldtrajlite.exe process and end it
3. then the OS recognizes the service has stopped and re-starts it after one minute as I selected in the recovery properties of this service.

My question/request:

Is there some kind of batch file or something that I could run, say 5 minutes after windows starts so I could 'automate' this process of ensuring DF is running without any overt action from me (or whoever is using the computer)?

Anyone willing to write it for me and tell me how to apply it?

(note: simply attempting to re-start the service will not work because the failed client is still in memory and XP will just answer the request with "an instance of the service is already running" (even though it isn't))

Thanks in advance

yeah, I run it on a regular basis, but like I said, XP does not respond to a stop request until the resident (idle) client is removed. XP just reports the service is already running or a re-start request from dfGUI or the XP service manager until foldtrajlite.lock has been removed and the idle (but still resident) service has been terminated. Same is true for dfQ. These apps both get the .lock file deleted, but the service also has to be terminated before it can be restarted.

You could try the following:

del <full path to df>\foldtrajlite.exe
net stop FoldtrajliteService
net start FoldtrajliteService

Thanks m0ti

to test this, I re-created the problem.... (it only took two re-starts for the service not to start properly) and ran a .bat file with those commands.... The service didn't get re-started. So, I recreated the problem again (this time it took 3 re-starts) and ran the commands one at a time from the command prompt (guessing that a pause between commands might help) but the system echoed "the service cannot be stopped". At this point, I opened task manager and ended the process (this works!) and then used the net start foldtrajliteservice command and it started fine. next, I tried the net stop foldtrajliteservice command and the service was stopped OK when it was in a normal running state. Is there a way to find out what command emulates the actions of "end the process" in the task manager?

is there such a thing as a 'kill' command or something like that that ends a process without requiring the cooperation of the process?

(Thanks for taking the time to help... I appreciate it very much)

OOOOOO, I may have found it..... taskkill /im image name I'll let you know if it works

Ok, I think I've got it!

(problem re-created on first boot this time) In the command prompt, I used 'del c:\distribfold\foldtrajlite.lock' to get rid of the lock file (DF doesn't end here.... it just stays resident in the "I'm stupid" state). Then I used 'taskkill /f /im foldtrajlite.exe' and it killed the process (just as though I had done it in the task manager).

Since I had configured the DF service to re-start on errors in the service manager, DF re-started (normally) after one minute.

Final Resolution

I made a .bat file with the following:

del c:\distribfold\foldtrajlite.lock
taskkill /f /im foldtrajlite.exe
net start foldtrajliteservice

and put that in the startup folder so it will run when I login.

Sid,

You could create a scheduled task at system startup... that way, even if you don't login it'll run.
