Finally a reason to stop lurking in these forums and post again

I know this is question has been asked many times (which MoB to get) and I know it depends really on your needs but I am looking for a bit of advice, esp. from any of you that have either boards set up on a system that as one of the multi-tasks its put to is video editing.

I am looking to build a system that will perform a variety of function (like most of us), some Gaming, office apps, but also some rather intensive applications as well (3-D animation, and Video Editing....nothing professional...just some things a friend and I are playing around with). More than likely I will be doing some overclocking at some point.

I have an idea of what I want for most of the components, but it's a toss up between these two MoBs...

What I like about DFI: the ability to really tweak your system and there isn't that "invisible ceiling" if you are tyring to OC a Winchester core processor.
What I don't like as much as it doesn't have a serial port (I know I should upgrade my drawing tablet from a serial to USB 2.0, but would rather take that $$$ and put it into other system components, and I could always slap in a serial port card to one of the PCI slots), and there are less PCI slots (it does have the 1x and 4x PCI-E but I haven't really seen boards for this yet).

What I like about MSI is the extra PCI slot (want to use my SB Audigy 2ZS rather than onboard sound), and that the second SATA controller is also SATA II (heard that even Sata I drives run faster on this interface) which is appealing for a SATA RAID for Video storage (either 2 150 or 2 200GB SATA drives in Raid 0 on this controller).

Seems in other areas they both have their stong and weak points. At some point I will add another graphics card to the system in SLI configuration.

And I'm fairly confident in a moment of boredom I will begin to overclock the system to see what I can get out of it (performance boost).

I know some may say got with a P4 for this type of work, but again I am going for the most bang for the $$$ and prefer to stick with AMD (some may even say <gasp> GET A MAC...oh my ears and brain bleed at that thought

I've read a fair share of reviews, but am looking for some comments from other users who may have set up a system with this in mind (gaming, some video, some 3-D etc).

Planning on going with an Athlon 3500 for now (tempted by the 4000) and more than likely a Winchester core (though maybe a Newcastle would be better for OCing). The FX processors are nice, but I would rather save my $$$$ now and when the dual core processors come up (and the BIOS of the MoB has been updated) invest in one of those and use the current CPU for another system.

BUMP.....

Anyone? (again trying to determine if the SATA II chip on the MSI will be all that much faster than the SATA I on the DFI if I am only using SATA I drives (mainly a video editing concern).

Think that is the BIG feature difference for me between the boards...

Thanks...I was leaning that way for a bit more "future-proofing" (when more PCI-E 1x and 4x boards show up).

Can always add in an inexpensive serial port card until I can upgrade my drawing tablet to a USB 2 (already sinking some bucks into this system  )

The DFI Ultra-D has an internal serial port header, but you'll have to supply your own female DB9/bracket/cable/plug for it. If you monkey around with hardware a lot, you might have one hanging around in the accessory kit from another mobo

Th DFI motherboard has SATAII on the four ports supplied by the NF4 chip, but not on the extra four ports from the add-on VIA chip. Also, SATAII does nothing that SATAI can't, because no drive (not even 15,000RPM SCSI drives) uses more than 1.5GB/s (SATAI's max) of bandwidth. I'd get the DFI becuase of the extra tweaking options that it has; especially vDimm, MSI has a 2.85 vDimm max, where as the DFI supports up to 4.0 RAM voltage.

Thanks for the help everyone....it will be the DFI Lanparty!

I Believe I read the that the Zalman 7000 will fit on this board (just don't drop the CU version on your foot...I didn't be looking at the specs/weight that would HURT! )

Saw a 7700 in a local shop the other day....D@MN was that thing HUGE!

7000 should fit the MoB (esp. if I use DIMM slots 2 and 4) and in the Cooler Master CM Stacker case.

Now just to order the parts and get it all working!
