Finally a reason to stop lurking in these forums and post again
I know this is question has been asked many times (which MoB to get) and I know it depends really on your needs but I am looking for a bit of advice, esp. from any of you that have either boards set up on a system that as one of the multi-tasks its put to is video editing.
I am looking to build a system that will perform a variety of function (like most of us), some Gaming, office apps, but also some rather intensive applications as well (3-D animation, and Video Editing....nothing professional...just some things a friend and I are playing around with). More than likely I will be doing some overclocking at some point.
I have an idea of what I want for most of the components, but it's a toss up between these two MoBs...
What I like about DFI: the ability to really tweak your system and there isn't that "invisible ceiling" if you are tyring to OC a Winchester core processor.
What I don't like as much as it doesn't have a serial port (I know I should upgrade my drawing tablet from a serial to USB 2.0, but would rather take that $$$ and put it into other system components, and I could always slap in a serial port card to one of the PCI slots), and there are less PCI slots (it does have the 1x and 4x PCI-E but I haven't really seen boards for this yet).
What I like about MSI is the extra PCI slot (want to use my SB Audigy 2ZS rather than onboard sound), and that the second SATA controller is also SATA II (heard that even Sata I drives run faster on this interface) which is appealing for a SATA RAID for Video storage (either 2 150 or 2 200GB SATA drives in Raid 0 on this controller).
Seems in other areas they both have their stong and weak points. At some point I will add another graphics card to the system in SLI configuration.
And I'm fairly confident in a moment of boredom I will begin to overclock the system to see what I can get out of it (performance boost).
I know some may say got with a P4 for this type of work, but again I am going for the most bang for the $$$ and prefer to stick with AMD (some may even say <gasp> GET A MAC...oh my ears and brain bleed at that thought
I've read a fair share of reviews, but am looking for some comments from other users who may have set up a system with this in mind (gaming, some video, some 3-D etc).
Planning on going with an Athlon 3500 for now (tempted by the 4000) and more than likely a Winchester core (though maybe a Newcastle would be better for OCing). The FX processors are nice, but I would rather save my $$$$ now and when the dual core processors come up (and the BIOS of the MoB has been updated) invest in one of those and use the current CPU for another system.
