Do I absolutely need a 480w+ power supply?

Is there any way to avoid spending 85$+?

Thanks guys, please link recommendations, buying tonight.

Or if anyone knows a good case/ps combo, that would be great!

Get the 500W Fortron Blue Storm. Very good PSU. You don't need a 480W+ PSU.
The things that matter the most is the amperage per rail. You want as high of a 12V rail as you can get from a quality manufacturer.

Two places you shouldn't skimp on is the HSF and the PSU...imo the two most important parts in a computer...so to answer your question, no you don't need it, but you SHOULD, an Antec New Power 480W or a Fortron Blue Storm 500W will make your system last and any future upgrades.

i'd say be willing to spend a modest amount on the PSU because if you do you will have system stability and power to upgrade easily in the future without having to worry about power issues.

I have done CRAZY research about this for my own build and I picked Seasonic.

Antec = Quiet, VERY nice voltage regulation. VERY tight.. like +/- 1%

OCZ = Moderate for noise, fan may make whining noise. +/- 2-3% regulation. Great that cables are shielded/twisted?

Fortron FSP = FRIGGN LOUD. This thing ramps up too fast for the fan. Regulation is decent, but I like the shielding. Fan goes full blast by the tiem you hit 250 W. Even 200W is hella loud

Seasonic = MY PICK. I have a 600W Seasonic. It's beautiful. Rock solid rails, very VERY quiet. Regulation is not as tight as Antec, but tighter than OCZ or Fortron from what I read. My measurements show 11.98v idle and 5.01 idle. Didn't test load, but +/- 2% is great. My only complaint is that the 12V rail is not as strong as say the Antec. You only get 18A per rail on the 600W and 16/17W for the 2 rails on the 500W. Antec gives you 18A already on their 480W model.

I warn you that Seasonics MAY HAVE problems w/ DFI LanParties. I have one myself, and I never had a problem. My friend however could not boot at all w/ his SEasonic.

MY decision was really between Antec and Seasonic because both are awesome PSUs, but Seasonic was quieter and it had twisted cables while Antec didn't.

I listened to the sounds on Silent PC Review and Seasonic wins HANDS DOWN.

My Fortron Blue Storm 500w isn't that loud.

I have 4 80mm sleeve bearing case fans (very quiet) 92mm Panaflo H1B CPU fan and I can't hear the PSU over the other fans, so unless you were going for a super quiet system, the Fortron is decent sounding. Not "friggin LOUD"...

no, its just hearsay.

Fortron makes some of the best power supplies. And they actually do make them, unlike the other companies listed. Is it as quiet as Seasonic? no

but it is quiet nonetheless.

there is a reason why people with 250W power supplies in their Dells can put a 6800GT or X800 in there with no problem - its because the power supply is made by Sparkle, a division of Fortron.

Fortron/Sparkle underrate their power supply, so in the end, they outperform the competition

It would do more than fine.

It has solid dual 12v. if you want something a bit fancier and want sleeved cables then the Blue Storm line from Fortron might suit you

get the 500W Blue Storm if you want to spend a bit more. get the regular Fortron if you don't

Fortron. 36 dB @ 200W??? WTF. It's blasting above 40dB already at 250W. Many systems will hit this easily. Low speed panaflos run at 30dB. Mediums run at 35. High speeds run at 40. Quiet? Right.

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article247-page4.html

Seasonic. 28dB at 250W. Awesome. Don't even break 30dB until 300W. Nothing at 40 until 500W. Sounds good.

Fortron seriously ramps up too fast. If you compare them to Enermax Noisetakers or OCZ Modstreams or Antec TP2.0s, the fan for Fortron ramps up WAY too fast.

Dude, they probably got an older version or something. I am using my fortron blue storm 500 as my only exaust fan in my antec p160 and i cant hear it at all. I works great, best psu i have ever had.

For the OP, get the fortron blue storm 500 at actbuy.com for 75 dollars free shipping. Thats where i got mine no problems.

Yeah I would agree, the price you can get on these and the qaulity of them nothing beats it.

Just cuz you can't hear it doesn't mean it's awesome. You could very well be running other loud fans. I speak as a SEASONIC user and once you go there with quietness, you'll never turn back. Sure when I used my old Antec I thought that was quiet, but now things are even better...

I don't get why all of you are recommending Fortron. Go read DFI-Street's recommendations, and they won't be pushing Fortron like mad....

obviously this person hasn't had a first hand experience with a Fortron before. its all just hearsay

Fortron actually makes its own power supplies. Fortron/Sparkle psus are in Dells and other companies because they offer the best bang for the buck, and they have a superior product compared to other companies

that is why a 250W Fortron/Sparkle can power a 6800 Ultra even. many people have used really old Fortrons/Sparkles to power the latest generation of gpus and other components

Personaly I also have a Seasonic 600watt PSU for my DFI SLI-DR, and its pretty much dead quiet even under load, if money was no object it would be what I'd rec. but in his price range a FSP group Bluestorm series PSU is the way to go.

Hearsay my foot. I read reviews. Go talk on forums. Anyone will admit Seasonic and Antec is quieter than Fortron/OCZ. This doesn't mean Fortron as a PSU sucks. It's voltage regulation is good (although not as tight as Seasonic or Antec). In fact I believe OCZ is slightly better in regulation as well. Finally, if its the loudest PSU out of the 4 I just listed, then that's not too good. You would rather pick a better PSU then.

For this price range, I recommend Antec or OCZ. But as the poster above suggested. 600W Seasonic FTW. I have one too.

If you can afford the parts below then you can definitely afford to purchase a quality psu.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=37&threadid=1666708&enterthread=y

mb: DFI Lanparty nf4 ultra
proc: 3200 AMD64 venice
ram: 2gb kit OCZ platinum
video: BFG 7800GT OC
hd: 2x80 hitachi sataII
audio: will be x-fi

You're also looking at the P180 case.

DFI now REQUIRES native 24-pin ATX molex & 480W for all the DFI N4 mobos.
http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/sho...22&postcount=34

These quality brands are highly recommended,
however not every power supply they offer will meet your needs,
be especially careful to make sure that the +12V rail(s) offer a
Minimum of +12V@26A for Single Video Card Systems & +12V@34A for Dual Video Card (SLI) Systems.
