System Set up

DFI ULTRA LAN PARTY IIB
2 Optical Drives
2 IDE Western Digital HD
1 20 gig with Windows XP
2 80 gig with Files and No apps
1 gig of RAM

Ok this is going to sound strange, and I am at wits end with this. So I would appreciate any advice that i can get to this problem. Although i have to RMA. which i am not looking forward to. Well onto the problem at hand.

I just Got the DFI Ultra IIB lan party board and I am trying to install it into my old machine. So i unplug everything and plug everything back in get ready to boot, and I get the following Error.

PXE - E61: media test failure check cable
PXE - MOP: Exiting Nvidia Boot Agent

So I go through a flury or cable connections and cable swaps. I try round cables I try flat cables. All to no avail. So i hit google with this message and i found a thread saying that i should try and remove my jumper on my drive. Well i do that and i get a perfect boot. But here is the rub. That only works with One drive not both IDE drives. So i proceed to try various Jumper combos. I set it to cable Select, Both Master, both slave, both with no jumper, and the proper Master Slave Config. and each time the same error message when i try to use two HDD or If i try to boot one with the jumper on it.

So next I try to see if the second HDD is bad. So i go and plug that it with no jumper and the BIOS see that drive. So i know the machine can recognize the drive.

So back to google and more searched. Found that this can be cause buy BIOS errors. So i go into the BIOS and make sure that i am set to Boot Floopy, CD ROM, HDD 0. And still no dice. I disabled the Onboard LAN. And again no dice.

Next thing Flash the BIOS. So i get the latest BIOS from DFI and tried it again. Yep no dice. Still get the same problem.

Than i get a new BIOS chip from DFI cause that might be crap. Plug that into that board had to go get the niffty Extractor from Radio Shack. yep Did not work.

So in a moment of desperation last night i Yanked the DFI out and put my old MOBO which is a seriously old Gigabyte Board. and Booted up. and Both HDDs were right there for my to access.

So that is my problem. Not sure what i should do. If anyone has any ideas out there i am more than willing to listen.

oh one more thing when i have the HDD hooked up to the DFI board and i try to boot off of the CD of Windows XP i get to the decteting Hardware screen and than the screen goes blank. I have waited up to 30min to see if anything happens and it just sits there dark. One HDD and i can get thought it fine but as soon as that jumper touches that Selector no DICE. also i tried various other jumpers. So I tired the full XP install.

Any insight would be great. Thanks for all the help ahead of time.

Scott

in first bios section make sure drivers are set to LBA, not CHS or Auto. This is a known issue that is being corrected. also try a different BIOS as that can help (there's plenty of them to choose from thanks to Oskar Wu).

try this combo also:

ide0 + cdrom 0 - PriIDE
ide1 + cdrom 1 - SecIDE

check out the link sixes gave you too...lots of information over there =)

lol its cool 3sixes...i like Anandtech as a site, but absolutely hate these horrendous forums. Ok well they arent that bad, but i just dont care for the forum layout so im VERY happy that people are directed to AMDMB forums. I do try to check here (at least search works here unlike HardOCP grrrr) and take care of answering but users like you usually send them on to AMDMB lol. WHich is good!

but

dont be afraid to ask here. Just make sure DFI is in the thread title somewhere or i will never see it as there are too many subforums here and no 'dfi' section so my searches are the best i can do

again, in case anyone takes offense, Anandtech is one of the best and most respected sites on the net, and as far as I know, Anand and DFI are on excellent terms as they review all of our boards lol. I just can't stand the forum layout as it makes it impossible to keep all DFI stuff in one section. But i love the site and the reviews here!

Ok so something strange is afoot with this motherboard. So i went home and tried to set the BIOS to LBA, and I had the same issue. So than I tired to plug just one drive into the Primary Channel and One into the Seconday Channel with no optical, and the bios sat on the Detecting IDE for like 15min. So that Had me scratching my head. I came to the conclusion that it was more than likely a HDD problem. But than I got fancy. I unpluged the IDE cable from the Secondary Slot to see if i can get the machine booted with just one drive. Tried One HDD and the MOBO would not boot. Than I thougth yeah that drive is dead so i tried the working HDD. and no boot. So this had me scratching me head. So for giggles i plug the IDE cable with no device on it into the secondary slot and It boots.

So now i am thourghly confused. This seems like stange behaviour for a Mobo so i can not decied weather it is the Mobo or the HDD since i can get the HDD working with my old gigbyte Mobo. Any ideas. Oh yeah stats again
