No, you don't need the 24 pin plug, but it's recommended in the manual.
As a matter of fact I'm running an Antec 350 watts with the DFI NF4 Ultra-D.
FYI, I'm not running a PCI-X video card at the moment.
Might have to switch to a more powerful power supply once I get the X800XL.

you definately will need more than 350W with that vid card.

Chino: IMO 300W is really pushing it. What are you running? I got a 550W Antec PSU just to make sure I'll never have power issues. I've been through 3 PSUs in the past 4 yrs, all because they were low quality or not powerful enough.

Don't go cheap on your PSU.

I wouldn't trust my new PCIe card to anything that isn't 24-pin. PCIe draws a lot more power than PCI/AGP, and needs a more stable supply of it without robbing the CPU of a good supply. That's the whole idea behind 24-pin PSUs, and it's why servers have been using them for a while (i think PCI-X is the same way). If you are throwing an X300SE and an A64 3000+ in there, at stock, i'm sure you'll be fine. Somhow i doubt that, though, so I'd pony up for a better PSU. Luckily, pretty much every 24-pin PSU should be adequate, since they are mostly high end PSUs. I've heard the Antecs are great, and i think they have a 480W that's not too expensive. I personally love my Vantec, it's pretty quiet and has plenty of power and airflow. I got it for $90 at newegg. Look at it this way - clearly you waited a while to buy into a good, stable platform to upgrade to, and i imagine you'd like to get an upgrade out of it. Well, you'd better believe that by the time you upgrade to a dual core A64, or an extra 2GB of ram, or a new 7600GT or X900XL or whatever, your PSU will be dead in the water, so why not just get a good one now, then it's one less thing you'll have to worry about later.

The general info going around is you better have a good 24 pin PSU or you're asking for trouble. I ordered the AGBP 500W 24pin ps from Newegg and should have it Friday. Fedex has had both my motherboard and psu at the local sorting facility.. and they've been there for 2 days. Guess they're using them as temporary furniture.

This was posted a while back, so how did the AGBP 500W work out?

Quick question, will an Antec True380W power supply work sufficiently with this motherboard? (DFI UT NF4 Ultra)

I'll be running one 6600 GT, AthlonXP 3000+, and 2 hard drives + 1 cdrw drive. This should be sufficient, no?

Well, thats a Athlon64, right? Cause no xp is going to fit in their!!!! Anyway, you MIGHT be good. I would look into a new psu. I purchased an E-Power Tagan 480 watt unit w/ 28A on the 12v rail. So far, no problems, but I don't have xp installed or oc'd yet. I think I need more graphit to get the board to mod, since it isn't reading modded!

Sorry, meant 64. It's late.

Only problem is the case I'm looking at (Piano Sonata) seems to *always* include the PSU.

Thanks for the help.

I hate how people always recommend 650w PSUs.

I ran mine on an antec 350sl with no adapter (all the extra power cables were plugged into the MB tho). No stability issues thru prime/3dmark/etc.

I upped the powersupply to overclock, but I didn't see the necessity for a stock config.

Hmm, anythoughts on this? I got a Lan Party Ultra 4, 4-512MB DDR DIMMS, ATI X700 Pro, Ultra Connect ATX 500 Watt(sadly a damn 20 pin power line). Without a hard drive in, I turn it on, get just a long beep every 5 seconds. Move the 20 pin to various sides of the MOBO power input until I finally got it to come on(which mean start at pin 1/2, not 23/24, leave pins 21-24 open just in case folsk are wondering. I tried everything but pulling the graphics card and same thing. Manual says a DRAM issue with that beep, but I dont know. I too get 3 out 4 status lights on MOBO.

Others say 20 pin works fine. Could it simply be that I need a 24 pin? I verified every connection, and cannot think of anything else. I cant believe the X700 is drawing that much power that it needs the extra 4, but it is PCIE x16, so that is probably what the last 4 pins are for, i just need someone to say: (HELL YES That is the problem), so I can quit wasting time, head out to Frys and get a 24 pin one. I know I could save money online, but I am not very patient. Thanks!

Why doesn't anybody read the manf's requirements ?

DFI specifically says it needs a native 24pin psu....... You know when you call DFI tech support , the first thing they will ask is "Do you have a native 24pin psu" ?

On the sticker on the mobo it list the following:

A64FX55, 2x6800U >25A, >500w ps
A643800+ , 2x6800GT >20A >400w ps
A643400+ , 2x6600GT >17A >350w ps

Look at these numbers and add 20% to take into consideration your other components.....

Jose

Assimilator,

If you haven't already fried your motherboard you will. You can only plug your power supply starting at pin 1-2, other pply have caught their systems on fire doing what you did.

Also I'd get a psu from Antec, Enermax, Zippy, PC Power & Cooling, or OCZ, definitely not a UltraX psu... Have you not seen the number of post on problems w/ that psu ?

Regards,
Jose

Thanks, I should have done my research before buying a "bargain rebate" PS. Been 5 years since I built my last one. Got a bit naive I reckon. Just walked in the house with the OCZ Powerstream. A bit dissapointed it is only 420W out of the box, but says it can handle up to 520W. Almost got the Seasonic 600W which seemed nicer. But also $40 more.

I have a 420W powerstream also and its a very high quality PS. Dont' be fooled by the wattage rating, it is better than most 500-550w power supplies.

lovely, I got a DOA PowerStream. I think I am gonna get myself the ModStream, save 10 bucks, get a higher wattage, at least 30 more, and have less mess. Those cables everywhere are a pain. Unless the adjustable power is worth it? ModStream vs PowerStream, any comments?
